the first time jisung noticed minho was in the school hallway when he was fifteen, carrying too many books and walking too fast. minho had been two years older even then, already taller, already confident in the careless way older students always seemed to be. jisung remembered the sound of the books hitting the floor, the echo of it sharp against the lockers, and the way minho had crouched down without hesitation to help him pick them up.

"you're gonna hurt your back like that," minho had said, grinning, handing jisung a notebook with a silly sticker on it.

jisung had flushed bright red and nodded too fast, unable to find the words to respond. minho had laughed, not unkindly, and introduced himself like it was the most natural thing in the world.
from then on, minho was just there.

he was there when jisung struggled with math homework and minho explained it in a way that actually made sense. he was there when jisung auditioned for a school performance and thought he bombed it, only for minho to wait for him outside the auditorium and tell him he did great. he was there through late-night convenience store runs, shared earphones on the bus, whispered jokes during assemblies.

jisung told himself it was normal to want to be around him all the time. normal to feel warm when minho laughed, normal to feel his chest tighten when minho talked about other people liking him. it was just admiration, jisung thought. just friendship.
but feelings have a way of growing quietly, like vines creeping up a wall when no one is watching.

by the time they graduated high school, jisung knew it wasn't just admiration anymore. it was love, heavy and frightening and precious. and by the time they ended up at the same university, even if minho was already in his third year when jisung arrived as a freshman, the feeling had settled deep in jisung's bones.

university didn't change their dynamic as much as jisung had feared. minho was busier, sure, with his major and club activities and friends from his year, but he still made time. he still texted jisung random thoughts, still dragged him out to eat when jisung forgot to take care of himself, still remembered the way jisung liked his coffee.

they met up between classes, studied together, complained about professors and deadlines. to everyone else, they were just really good friends. to jisung, minho was the axis his world quietly rotated around.

which was why the message hit him like a punch to the chest.

jisung had been napping that afternoon because he'd stayed up too late the night before finishing an assignment. his room was dim, curtains half-drawn, the winter light weak and gray. his phone buzzing against the desk felt too loud, too sudden.

> minho <3: i need help with something

jisung groaned softly and rolled onto his side, fumbling for his phone. he squinted at the screen, blinking the sleep away, and typed back without thinking too much.

> jisung: with what?

he stared at the three dots that appeared almost instantly, his heart doing a small, traitorous flip just at the speed of minho's reply.
