the heat had settled over the city long before the morning had properly begun.
it was barely nine in the morning, yet the sunlight pouring through the apartment windows already carried that heavy, suffocating warmth that only july seemed capable of creating. golden light spilled across the hardwood floors in thick, lazy streaks, making the entire apartment glow despite the fact that neither of them had bothered to switch on a single lamp.
outside, the streets were quieter than usual, save for the occasional passing car and the distant chatter of neighbors already beginning their day. even the trees lining the sidewalks barely moved, their leaves hanging limply beneath a sky so painfully blue it almost looked fake.
the air itself felt heavy. not humid enough to rain, not dry enough to offer any comfort, just warm enough to cling stubbornly to every surface it touched.
opening the windows hadn't helped much. all it had done was invite more heat inside, replacing the slightly cooler air from the night before with the promise of another sweltering summer day.
jisung already hated it.
"summer is not for the weak," he muttered to absolutely no one, rubbing sleep from his eyes as he shuffled into the kitchen.
he said it every single year.
without fail.
the first heatwave arrived, and suddenly those five words became his entire personality until autumn finally rescued him. every july, he declared that human beings simply weren't built to exist in temperatures like these. every august, he insisted the weather had somehow become personally offended by him. and every september, he dramatically announced he'd survived another summer against impossible odds.
this year wasn't shaping up to be any different.
because surviving summer meant surviving the relentless heat.
it meant surviving sunlight that somehow felt hot enough to burn through clothing before he'd even stepped outside.
it meant surviving the sticky afternoons where even breathing felt like too much effort.
and, unfortunately-
or perhaps fortunately, depending on how honest he wanted to be with himself-
it also meant surviving minho without a shirt.
jisung had long accepted that they lived together, and with that came countless little domestic habits neither of them thought twice about anymore. minho wandered around the apartment half-awake while making coffee. he left his books scattered across the couch. he hummed quietly whenever he cooked.
