the day started before the sun had fully burned through the thin layer of fog hanging over the beach.
everything felt pale blue and gold in the early morning light, washed soft around the edges like an old photograph left in someone's car all summer. the ocean moved slowly beyond the shore, low waves curling onto the sand with sleepy little sighs, and the whole town still smelled cold from the night before - damp wood, saltwater, sunscreen soaked into sidewalks from yesterday's heat.
jisung woke up tangled sideways across minho's bed with one leg hanging completely off the mattress.
the window above them was open just enough for the curtains to move every few seconds with the breeze, and somewhere outside, gulls were already screaming at each other over the pier. minho was still asleep beside him, one arm loosely wrapped around jisung's waist, face buried halfway into the pillow.
jisung blinked slowly at the ceiling for a minute before turning his head.
even half asleep, minho looked annoyingly perfect.
his hair was messy from sleep, soft dark strands falling over his forehead. there was a faint line pressed into his cheek from the pillowcase, and his skin looked warm already from the sunlight slipping through the curtains. jisung stared at him for a long moment with the kind of quiet fondness that had become dangerously normal lately.
summer had done something awful to them.
back in spring, they'd still acted shy sometimes. there had been nervous silences and awkward pauses and moments where jisung overthought every text message for thirty minutes before sending it.
now minho slept with his hand tucked under jisung's shirt like it belonged there.
now jisung knew exactly how minho sounded five minutes after waking up - voice rough and low and sleepy enough to make his stomach flip over itself.
it felt unfair.
jisung reached over and poked minho's cheek.
"you have work," he whispered.
minho made a soft noise and ignored him completely.
jisung poked him again.
"lifeguard lee," he said more dramatically. "people are going to drown because you're busy being lazy."
without opening his eyes, minho tightened his arm around jisung and dragged him closer until jisung nearly yelped.
"five more minutes," minho mumbled against the pillow.
"that's what you said fifteen minutes ago."
"and i meant it every time."
jisung snorted quietly.
outside, sunlight continued slowly spilling across the room, warming the sheets and turning everything gold around the edges. the fan in the corner clicked lazily as it rotated, barely helping against the heat that had already started building despite how early it was.
summer mornings always felt sticky before they even properly began.
eventually minho opened one eye, clearly deciding jisung wasn't going to let him sleep anymore.
"what time is it," he muttered.
jisung checked his phone.
"too early. i think mornings should actually be illegal during summer."
