the snow had fallen sometime in the dark hours before morning, quiet and patient, like it knew better than to announce itself. it softened the city outside their windows, pressing mute on the usual distant traffic and hum of life. when jisung stirred, the world still felt paused.

he woke before dawn, as he often did on days that mattered to him. not because of an alarm - there wasn't one set - but because his mind never quite learned how to rest when excitement curled beneath his ribs. christmas had been loud and dazzling once, years ago, wrapped in schedules and expectations and the constant pull of other people. now, it was this. stillness. familiarity. the slow, gentle thrill of knowing exactly who he would spend the day with.

jisung lay there for a moment, eyes half-open, breathing in the quiet. the bedroom was dark except for a soft glow slipping in from the living room, the christmas tree lights still on from the night before. minho slept beside him, turned slightly onto his side, one arm flung out where jisung had been only moments earlier. his hair was mussed, lips parted just enough to let out soft, even breaths. jisung smiled without meaning to.

carefully, so carefully, he shifted. he disentangled himself from the warmth of the blankets and from minho's reach, moving slowly enough that the mattress barely dipped. minho didn't stir. jisung paused anyway, holding his breath like he always did, watching for any sign that he'd been noticed. when there was none, he relaxed.

the cold air kissed his skin as he swung his legs out of bed. he shivered, then reached automatically for the hoodie draped over the back of the chair. it wasn't his. it never was. minho's clothes had a way of becoming his without discussion, without ceremony, just quiet assimilation. he tugged the hoodie over his head, sleeves long enough to cover his hands, the fabric warm and familiar with minho's scent. it settled over him like a habit.

barefoot, jisung padded out of the bedroom. the apartment greeted him with low light and soft shadows. the christmas tree stood in the corner of the living room, branches glowing faintly, ornaments catching the light in muted flashes of gold and red. they had meant to turn it off before bed, but neither of them had remembered, and now jisung was glad for it. it made the space feel held together, like the night hadn't fully let go yet.

he moved into the kitchen, the tile cool beneath his feet. the window above the sink framed the city outside, now blanketed in white. snow clung to ledges and railings, smoothed over sharp edges, made everything look gentler. jisung stood there for a moment, just looking, his breath fogging faintly against the glass.

he filled the kettle with water and set it on the stove, the quiet clink of metal against metal loud in the early hour. as it heated, he moved on autopilot, reaching for mugs from the cupboard. one, then another. he set them on the counter side by side without thinking, fingers moving from muscle memory rather than intention. it wasn't until he reached for the tea bags that he paused.

jisung stared at the two mugs, identical except for the small chip in the rim of one, and felt something warm bloom in his chest. he hadn't planned to make tea for both of them. he hadn't even thought about it. his body just knew.
