minho was the first to notice the change in the air. it was subtle, the kind of shift that only someone who paid too much attention to the little things would catch - the breeze carried a faint crispness that hadn't been there a week ago, the sunlight felt softer against his skin, and the shadows stretched just a little longer. autumn was arriving, slow but steady, and minho loved every part of it.
jisung, on the other hand, wasn't paying attention to the seasons. he was too busy tugging at minho's sleeve as they left the small café where they'd just eaten lunch, his cheeks puffed slightly from the bite of cookie he insisted he still had room for even after finishing a full meal.
"come on," jisung said around his mouthful, his voice slightly muffled, "let's go for a walk."
minho glanced at him, already half-expecting the pout that would follow if he dared to suggest otherwise. and really, why would he say no? he couldn't. he never could when it came to jisung.
so they walked.
the streets weren't crowded, which was unusual for the middle of the day. maybe people were at work, maybe at school, maybe just avoiding the in-between weather that couldn't decide if it wanted to be warm or cold. the sky was clear today, a soft blue painted with streaks of sunlight, and the air carried the faint smell of earth and leaves, a reminder of the rain from yesterday.
"you're gonna be cold," minho muttered as his eyes flicked down to jisung's too-thin jacket.
jisung turned to look at him, eyebrows raised, lips pushed out in a pout that minho had grown far too used to. "no, i'm not," he shot back, stubborn as always, before turning his gaze forward again.
minho rolled his eyes but said nothing else. it wasn't worth the argument, not when jisung's hand was warm in his. he let out a small sigh and let the silence fall between them.
they didn't need words to fill the quiet. the rhythm of their steps, the way jisung occasionally swung their joined hands, the crunch of shoes against the pavement - those sounds were enough. it was a comfortable kind of silence, the kind that wrapped around them like a blanket, reminding minho once again why he loved autumn so much.
autumn meant cozy mornings with blankets and tea, the smell of roasted chestnuts sold by vendors on the street, and skies painted in gold and orange.
but it also meant long walks with jisung, cheeks flushed pink from the wind, hair falling into his eyes no matter how many times he pushed it back. autumn wasn't autumn without him.
today, they had no plan. no deadlines, no rehearsals, no errands to run. just time, stretched out like an open road in front of them. jisung had suggested the walk so casually, like it was nothing, but minho's heart swelled anyway. because for him, it wasn't nothing. it was everything.
they followed the sidewalk, scattered here and there with leaves that had just begun to fall. not enough to cover the ground fully, not yet, but enough to paint the path with hints of yellow and red. minho watched the way jisung's shoes occasionally kicked at them, sending the leaves tumbling, and it made him smile.
before long, they reached a familiar corner. minho's steps slowed, his eyes lifting to the park that stretched out in front of them. not just any park - the park.
jisung noticed at the same time. his eyes lit up instantly, widening with recognition, and he turned to minho with a look that made minho's chest ache in the best way.
