jisung was having a bad day, and it had begun in the kind of abrupt, disorienting way that made everything afterward feel slightly unreal, like he had stepped into a version of his life where nothing quite aligned. he woke with a violent jolt, heart hammering, the gray morning light already filtering through the thin curtains in a way that immediately told him something was wrong.
his phone lay facedown on the floor, having slipped off his bed sometime during the night, and when he scrambled to grab it, his stomach dropped at the time glaring back at him. eight minutes before his first class. eight.
he stared at it for a second longer than necessary, as if the numbers might rearrange themselves out of pity, but they didn't. they never did.
he groaned, dragging a hand down his face before pushing himself upright, the remnants of sleep still clinging to him like a heavy fog. there was no point rushing for that class - he knew it, accepted it with a dull resignation that settled in his chest. instead, he recalculated, mentally mapping out how fast he could get ready and still make it to his second lecture without being embarrassingly late.
everything became hurried and clumsy after that. he stumbled out of bed, only to immediately hiss in pain when his foot collided sharply with the corner of the frame. the sting shot up his leg, making him hop awkwardly across the room while muttering under his breath, irritation blooming alongside the ache.
the rest of his morning didn't improve. he fumbled with his clothes, nearly putting his shirt on inside out before noticing, and when he rushed to the kitchen to at least grab something to eat later, he was met with the disappointing reality of an empty bread bag sitting limply on the counter.
he stared at it like it had personally betrayed him. no sandwich. no time to cook anything else. his stomach gave a quiet, traitorous growl, and he clicked his tongue in annoyance, grabbing his bag instead and shoving his things inside with more force than necessary.
by the time he left his apartment, the day already felt like it had slipped slightly out of his control, like he was chasing after it rather than living it.
the walk to campus was brisk, his steps quick and uneven, his mind running faster than his body as he mentally listed everything that had already gone wrong.
by some small miracle - or perhaps just sheer stubborn determination - he made it to his second class three minutes before it started, slipping into his seat with a quiet exhale as he tried to steady his breathing. his hair was still slightly messy, his foot still throbbed faintly, and his stomach was very much aware of its emptiness.
the lecture began, the professor's voice droning on in a steady rhythm that usually soothed him but today only made his eyelids feel heavier.
jisung rested his chin in his hand, blinking slowly as he tried to focus on the slides, but his thoughts kept drifting, slipping through his grasp like water. it was one of those days where concentration felt just out of reach, no matter how hard he tried to pull it back.
then his phone buzzed.
the sound was quiet but sharp enough to cut through his haze, and without thinking - without caring, really - he slipped it out of his pocket beneath the desk. he knew he wasn't supposed to use it during class, but the rules felt distant and unimportant compared to the small flicker of curiosity that sparked in his chest.
