Just after David killed Goliath, Saul brought David back to his palace. That was where David first met Jonathan. Jonathan was Saul's son and Michal's brother.

On that day, David had been talking with Saul. David heard someone behind him. He turned, and saw Jonathan. The two young men had stared at each other.

In that split second, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David. Jonathan knew he had found a best frend for life. From that moment on, Jonathan loved David as himself. The two young men promised to be best friends for ever and ever. Jonathan gave his robe, sword, bow and belt to David.

Years later, Saul told Jonathan and his servants to kill David.

But Jonathan was more than a brother to David. He ran to him and said, "My father wants to kill you! Please, be very, very careful in the morning. You must hide. Then I will talk to my father about you."

Jonathan spent the next morning with his father. He talked about how good David was and how wrong Saul was to try and have him killed.

Finally, Saul promised not to hurt David. David came back to the palace.

But Saul did not keep his promise. Soon he became angry all over again.
