"Good morning, Hajime, you look very nice today."
Hajime couldn't remember when it happened exactly. When this girl began complimenting him everyday, or even when she began calling him by his first name. He just knew that it happened, and that he didn't hate it.
(f/n) had been the manager of the Aobajousai Boys Volleyball Club since she had entered high school the same year as Oikawa and Iwaizumi, but they had never associated with each other all that much.
However, in their second year something changed. She began complimenting Hajime on how he did in practice, how he looked that day, or how impressive it was that he was able to keep Oikawa in check everyday.
At first he brushed the compliments off; he didn't care much about them, and he figured she would grow tired of his lack of response and leave him alone after a while. After weeks of compliments, day after day, Oikawa swore that she had a crush on Hajime; the taller boy told him that she was complimenting him so she could get his attention, and he told his best friend that he would never forgive him if he didn't speak with her about it immediately.
Iwa-Chan, being the straight forward man he is, went up to her the next day and asked her if that was true, but she declined. She told him that although it was true she did like him, she wasn't going to compliment him just to get his attention; she just wanted him to understand that she appreciated certain qualities about him.
He had asked her out after that, since every aspect of this girl seemed like great girlfriend material, and they'd been dating since. He figured after a year of dating the compliments might calm down a bit.
He was completely and utterly wrong.
Now, the compliments were even more meaningful, and they seemed to come more often. Some days she could tell he needed them. Even though he didn't show his emotions much, she knew when he needed to cool down, or when he was feeling rather shitty. On those days she would give him more compliments, but she delivered them in more subtle ways.
It was something she did he had grown used to, and something about her he truly enjoyed.
So, that morning, when she told him that he was looking very good and she couldn't wait to spend time with him after practice, he wasn't fazed at all. He did let his curiosity get the best of him though, and decided to ask her the question he'd been wanting a real answer to for over a year.
"(f/n), why do you always compliment me?"
They were walking to school together, something they only got to do alone every once in a while, since Oikawa usually walked along with them, his mouth running the whole time. Today the brown haired boy had other things to tend to, so they walked alone with their hands were clasped together, and (f/n) was swinging them slightly.
"Is it wrong for a girl to compliment her boyfriend?" she retorted, looking up at him curiously.
"Well, I guess not, but isn't it the boys job to compliment the girl?"
(f/n) immediately broke out in a fit of giggles, finding her boyfriend oddly cute when he was being so completely ignorant.
"It's everyone's job to compliment everyone, silly," she stated, which her boyfriend just sighed at.
She realized he was expecting more of an explanation, so she gave it to him.
"It's nice to feel like someone appreciates the small things about you. I figured you weren't told very often that you were a good person, and handsome. Girls latch themselves onto Oikawa and don't take any notice in you, even though you are handsome, talented, and a very great human over all.
"So, as someone who cares about seeing you happy - although it's sometimes hard to tell when you are - I made it my job to tell you that I think those nice things about you."
Hajime was extremely taken back by her words, and had even stopped walking for a moment to process them. It had always surprised him how easy it was for her to express her feelings. She was better at talking with people than anyone; she made people feel like they mattered with so few words.
"I-I guess that is reasonable."
(f/n), who was now standing directly in front of Hajime, laughed lightly again and then pulled his face closer to hers.
"You're unbelievably cute, Hajime."
His face flushed at that, and he immediately turned it away from her. "I-I'm not cute! I'm almost a college man, college men aren't cute."
His girlfriend laughed at his response and forced him to look at her again. She leaned in and kissed him lightly. The kiss only lasted a few seconds, and once they pulled away a smile crossed the girl's face.
"Cutie," she whispered before pulling him into another kiss.
