Just like Daichi, (f/n) had a whole of three constants in her life; 1.) anime, which she started really watching as soon as she could understand the difference between cartoons and anime (it grew even harder then for Daichi to try and get her outside to play volleyball, and it was even harder for her to try and convince Daichi to stay inside and watch anime with her,) 2.) Sawamura Daichi, and 3.) the persistence of her parents to get with the second constant, aka Sawamura Daichi.
Her parents were absolutely infatuated with Daichi - (f/n) was sure that if her mother was twenty-five years younger and not married that she would get with Daichi at the drop of a hat. (not like (f/n) could blame her, though - he was the perfect young man.)
It was cute, at first, the confidence she and Daichi's parents exerted when trying to set them up - play dates when they were younger, giving them money and sending them out when they were teens, winking and sending small hints towards the girl to get with the boy. It was cute, harmless, but after sometime it just became annoying.
Her parents didn't understand - you don't just date your best friend. It was more complicated than that; so much was at risk, and (f/n) wasn't sure she wanted to dive in and risk the single greatest relationship she had in her life, risk the most amazing constant she had going on for something that might not even last. (Yes Daichi was better than anime and yes, sometimes (f/n) felt really embarrassed admitting that.)
(f/n) also just really wasn't sure she could ever date Daichi - he knew too much about her and she about him, and she was afraid it would get boring fast. She couldn't share embarrassing stories about her childhood or tell Daichi about her favorite moments with her favorite friends because Daichi was apart of all of those moments - Daichi was her favorite friend.
Plus, people act different in romantic relationships compared to platonic ones - (f/n) didn't want Daichi to act different towards her; she liked how she and Daichi were now, friendly and happy and always together. She was pleased with the way he acted currently, and she wasn't going to risk always having Daichi there for her just to try something different in her life - it wasn't worth the risk.
Or at least she thought it wasn't worth it.
But when they left for college - the same one, of course, because they weren't sure how they could handle leaving their families and each other at the same time period - things started to change.
Despite living just as close as they had before (dorm rooms just down the hall from each other) they didn't see each other as often.
It was always (f/n) having to study and Daichi having practice and them both just too damn overworked and busy to see the other, and (f/n) was starting to feel it physically. Her new roommate was shit, not at all what she had wanted in a roommate or potential friend. Daichi, on the other hand, loved his new roommate. The man was like (f/n) as a boy, and she felt herself being replaced before it had even started happening, and it hurt.
But the times they got to hang out - the times where they could sit on the couch together and watch anime, the times like the old times - made (f/n) feel good, better than she ever had really. Because moments with Daichi had become rather rare (f/n) got to appreciate them more, and they helped her understand just how much she would love to date Daichi.
He was everything she could want in a partner - strong and protective and smart and handsome. He was always there for her, even when he needed to study from some stupid exam and when he just got out of practice and really just wanted a hot shower and some good food. Daichi was good at putting (f/n) before him, and she realized she did the same - if Daichi was stressing out, she'd spend her time helping calm him down, she'd stay up until he was finally relaxing and going to bed, and she'd force him to when he refused.
