~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(f/n) was confused - it wasn't an uncommon thing, especially because she went to Karasuno High School and was great friends with the crazy people of the volleyball club. They were always playing jokes on her, pranking her, confusing her.
But this, THIS was different.
In the midst of being unsure of herself - which also happened quite a bit - (f/n) told Nishinoya about her terribly humongous crush on Kageyama, only for the second year to go on and on and on about how sure he was that the black haired boy felt the same.
That wasn't what confused (f/n) - it wouldn't be weird for Kageyama to like (f/n), because she was pretty damn cool, and she tried pretty hard to impress the boy sometimes. The confusing part was that (f/n) was almost a hundred percent sure that Kageyama was in a relationship with Hinata.
Time and time again (f/n) had found herself sure that Kageyama was interested in her. He was always blushing and stuttering around her, and any sort of contact - even a brush of their hands - made him a mess. (f/n) felt like she had the power with the boy around, able to just say one thing and send him into an embarrassing ramble.
But then she would see Kageyama and Hinata, fighting like a married couple one minute and talking just fine the next with stupid smiles on their faces. She would find them talking with each other about volleyball, and she'd be jealous because she'd never seen Kageyama so damn excited to talk to someone about anything - he looked so fucking happy while talking with Hinata.
Yeah, it was a possibility that Kageyama liked them both, but her mind immediately went against her when thinking about this because she couldn't get Kageyama to talk like that - she couldn't get him to talk any louder than his normal voice level, and she definitely couldn't get any excited words out of his mouth like Hinata could.
In the end (f/n) was sure that Kageyama's affections pointed back to Hinata. And boy was she embarrassed when she was proved wrong.
*****
It was after school one day; Kageyama had asked to talk to (f/n) before his practice started, so they were stood outside the gym awkwardly, the girl waiting for the boy to finally just say something.
When he finally built up the courage to start talking, it was a bunch of jumbled, embarrassed words and curses directed at himself. (f/n) let him stumble over his words for about forty seconds before she was covering his mouth with her hand.
"You need to take a few calming breaths really quick, Kageyama - you sound like you might cry. Just breathe for a minute, okay?" When she moved her hand Kageyama did as he was told to, although the red tint on his face only seemed to darken. Once he was breathing normal again (f/n) nodded. "Try again if you want to."
"Okay, so," he started, his speech understandable now. He made sure to avoid eye contact when he spoke next, his words forced and fast. "I like somebody and I don't know how to tell them."
"Oh," (f/n) said, her eyebrows scrunching up. She thought for a moment before speaking again. "Well, you just gotta tell them, really. If they don't like you back it will be sad to deal with for a while, but the pain will pass eventually." Kageyama nodded, looking at (f/n) every once in a while before looking away again. "If it's any help I think Hinata likes you back, and I think he would love it if you just out and told hi-"
"WHAT?" Kageyama yelled, and (f/n) jumped back in surprise. She didn't know why he was yelling so she didn't speak again. "(l/n) please repeat yourself I think I heard you wrong."
"Oh, I said that I'm sure Hinata likes you back."
"WHAT THE HELL MAKES YOU THINK I LIKE THAT DUMBASS?" Kageyama screamed again, his eyes wider than (f/n) had ever seen them.
"It's okay to like him Kageyama, it's nothing to be embarrassed about."
Kageyama was practically fuming by now. "I DON'T LIKE HIM I WAS TALKING ABOUT YOU, I LIKE YOU YOU IDIOT!"
(f/n)'s face paled and her mouth dropped into an 'o' shape. "Oh," she said quietly, before registering what he said completely. "OH! No, Kageyama, I must have gotten the wrong impression - you guys just argue like a married couple and you are so close to each other and you look so happy when you guys talk with each oth-"
"THAT'S BECAUSE OF VOLLEYBALL I LOVE VOLLEYBALL NOT HIM."
"WELL EXCUSE ME BUT YOU SHOULDN'T LOOK THAT DAMN HAPPY WHEN YOU TALK ABOUT A SPORT! YOU PRACTICALLY GET HEARTS IN YOUR EYES I WAS ACTUALLY JEALOUS OF HINATA, BUT I'M NOT GOING TO BE JEALOUS OF A SPORT."
They were quiet for a moment, and then Kageyama was blushing again. "You got jealous because you thought I liked Hinata?"
(f/n) nodded, growing as flustered as Kageyama was. "Of course I did, you really seemed to like him."
"Well he's not bad as a friend, but I like like you, not him."
(f/n) looked down at her hands. "Well, I like like you too, idiot."
"Na.. Nuff... Nice." Kageyama chocked out, and (f/n) laughed at how hard it was for him to say that.
"So ugh, what now? Are we dating?" she asked quietly, and when she looked up Kageyama was nodding vigorously.
"Y-Yeah, let's date, t-that sounds cool." They stood awkwardly for a moment before Kageyama was called into the gym by Daichi, and the two didn't know what to do then.
(f/n) decided that she should be the one to speak, because Kageyama was far more awkward than she. "So, I'll see you later?"
"Let me walk you home!" Kageyama shouted, his voice betraying how desperate he was. "If you want. Suga told me that's a romantic thing to do."
(f/n) nodded, the thought of Kageyama walking her home bringing a smile to her face. "I'll see you after club, then," she said quietly. She didn't know how to part - a hug, a kiss to the cheek? - so she held her hand up.
Kageyama awkwardly high fived her and then (f/n) was running away from the gym and towards her own club. Kageyama turned and walked into the gym like a robot, and he was met with the entire team immediately, Tanaka and Noya laughing their asses off.
"That was the most awkward encounter we'd ever watched unfold," Tanaka said, holding his stomach as he laughed.
Suga slapped him and Noya on the back of their heads. "At least he has the guts to tell the person he likes how he feels - be nice," he chastised, and the two defleated immediately.
Hinata walked up to Kageyama, a wide smile on his face. "Good job dude, I told you she liked you back!"
Kageyama couldn't find it in himself to yell at Hinata - he was far too happy for that right now - but he did manage a short glare before they were called to start practice.
Kageyama did better that day in practice than he had any other day since he'd started the club at Karasuno, and he didn't even yell at Hinata when he missed a spike.
Suga and Daichi met eyes, and they seemed to share a thought - this whole Kageyama getting a girlfriend thing was going to work out great for everyone.
