The house was quiet when he walked in - it was unusual, really. There was usually music playing or somebody singing or a TV going in the background. He wasn't sure why he expected the apartment to look any different; he'd only been gone for about two days, and (f/n) worked both of them so it wasn't a lot of time for her to change anything. The girl hadn't said a word to him about changing anything, but they hadn't spoken much at all either - he'd sent her a few 'yes I'm alive' texts, but nothing more than that.
As he ventured further into the house - not even stopping to take off his shoes - he felt his heart swell with emotion. Guilt, fear, sadness, nervousness. Tanaka had never been in a fight like that, especially not with (f/n), and he never wanted to fight with her. He couldn't even remember what the fight was about - just that they were both so mad, so annoyed with each other over something probably so extremely trivial that it didn't actually matter.
When Tanaka made his way into the living room and saw the state of the couch he felt like crying. The blanket from their bed and Tanaka's pillow were on the couch, an obvious sign that (f/n) had been sleeping there, and their was a half filled takeout carton on the small coffee table that Tanaka figured was from the night before. He moved to the couch and allowed himself to lie on the plush cushions, under he and (f/n)'s blanket.
Once he was settled on the couch, surrounded by the smell of (f/n), of him, of home, Tanaka closed his eyes and fell asleep comfortably for the first time in two days.
*****
He woke up to the sound of keys in the front door, and the voice of (f/n) talking to somebody.
"No, he isn't home yet - yes I'm sure, his shoes aren't here. No, I'm just going to stay home and wait for him. If he doesn't come home tonight I'll call him in the morning and ask him when we're going to talk about it."
While she finished her conversation on the phone she did as she usually did upon getting home - took off her shoes, hung up her coat, set her keys on the small table next to the door. Once she'd hung up she let out a loud sigh before walking into the living room.
Tanaka, more nervous than he'd ever been, pretended to still be asleep. (f/n) was confused upon seeing him, but she couldn't fight the small smile that crossed her face. He came back - over the last two days she'd convinced herself he wouldn't come back, that he'd leave her alone forever, but he came home.
She probably should have woken him up, probably should have talked to him, but she didn't - she took off her pants, moved back the blanket, and squeezed herself into the void between Tanaka's body and the back of the couch. She lightly kissed under his chin, something she knew he loved when he was awake.
"I love you," she mumbled, hoping that he'd understand even though he was asleep. "I love you, I love you, I love you."
*****
When (f/n) woke up it was two in the morning and she was so exhausted she'd thought she had dreamed it all. But, upon walking into the kitchen, she was proved wrong.
Tanaka was there, in his boxers and a t-shirt, freshly showered and washing the dishes. He was humming - not loud enough to wake (f/n) up, but loud enough that she could hear him from the doorway of the kitchen.
(f/n) wasn't sure how to start the conversation - she almost told him he didn't have to do the dishes, but Tanaka would just counter with 'I know that, but I want to.' and then (f/n) would feel like shit because of course he wanted to - Tanaka loved being of help.
She decided not to talk - instead she walked up to the other side of the sink and began rinsing the dishes and drying them. Tanaka looked at her in surprise for a moment before continuing on with his job.
It was Tanaka who spoke first, knowing that (f/n) wouldn't - she didn't like fighting, didn't like confrontation at all. She wanted them to be okay all the time, even though she knew it was impossible.
"I'm sorry," he said, looking over at her briefly before looking back to the dishes in his hands. "I don't even remember why we started to argue, or what we even said, but I'm sorry that it happened, and I'm sorry that I left, and I'm sorry that I didn't come home for two days." He looked to her again, and his eyes were filling with tears. "I'm so, so sorry, (f/n)."
(f/n) actually started crying then, and she was reaching out to pull Tanaka into a hug. Tanaka didn't hesitate to wrap his arms around her, soapy hands resting on her back and soaking through her shirt. They didn't talk - just cried a little as they held each other close. When they pulled away (f/n) started laughing, because they were a mess.
She spoke once she was reaching up to wipe away Tanaka's tears. "First big fight is over and we're crying while washing dishes."
Tanaka laughed. "We're a mess, huh?"
(f/n) nodded and pulled him down so that his forehead was resting on his. "Yeah, but it's kinda nice."
"I love you," Tanaka said, his smile large and dopey.
(f/n)'s smile grew to match his. "I love you too," she said before placing a soft, short kiss on his lips. "Let's go relax - now that all of this is settled I'm ready to sleep some more."
Tanaka's smile grew wide and he lifted (f/n) up, causing her to giggle. "To the palace, my queen."
In the end Tanaka threw her on the couch, put in a sappy movie, and cuddled up with her. They stayed like that early into the morning, huddled together on their couch under their blanket. They moved only to pee and get more snacks, and Tanaka made a bad habit of turning (f/n) away from the movie so he could kiss her lightly.
They fell asleep on the couch that night, in an uncomfortable position that would lead to cramped necks and sore arm muscles, but it was still the best night of sleep either of them had received in days. They were together like they needed to be, and Tanaka reminded himself to never leave (f/n)'s side again.
