~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 Oikawa never really planned on settling down - once he hit college he was as everyone had expected him to be; different people in bed with him most nights, parties on every night that he didn't have to worry about practice, all kinds of people that he could get with and then dispose of whenever he pleased. And he fucking loved it.
He was popular - boys wanted to be friends with one of the most amazing people in their college, girls wanted to get with him so they could say they'd been with the Oikawa Tooru, and he finally, finally was somewhere that he wasn't inferior to Ushiwaka or Kageyama because they were so far away and he was finally able to just be him and have fun.
It was when a girl refused to sleep with him that he realized he wasn't completely content with what he was doing. She'd told him that he was a great guy - good looking, smart, talented, kind - but she wasn't interested in just being a one night thing with someone.
And that thought haunted Oikawa night after night. He questioned if he was really happy with just being a one night thing for people, if he was really okay with being something that someone could brag about. Yeah, it was super nice for people to be happy because they had the chance to get with him, and he didn't have any problem with all of the people that wanted to be with him, but they didn't know him.
They didn't know that he had a book shelf solely filled with books about aliens and that when he was younger he ate a worm when Iwa-Chan had dared him to and they didn't know about the happiness he felt when he got a good serve in and the absolute sorrow he felt when he was compared to Kageyama or Ushiwaka. Nobody knew these things, nobody but Iwa-Chan and that's because he was Oikawa's best friend.
And he only realized two weeks after being rejected that he wanted that - wanted someone to listen to all of his stories and laugh and cry when he laughs and cries. Oikawa wanted someone to spend his life with, the good and the bad, the happy and the sad, the beautiful and the ugly. Somebody who was as good a friend to him as Iwa-Chan has always been - somebody he could always count on.
He got that during his third year of college.
Enter (f/n).
When Oikawa looked back on it now it must have been weird to everyone. He was taking (f/n) out on dates and smiling so damn wide with her around and he was showing her his alien books and telling her embarrassing stories of he and Iwa-Chan as children - it was so out of the ordinary for him but it felt so damn good.
He partied less and less and stopped accepting gifts from any person that was potentially interested in him - he focused on the important things in his life; class, volleyball, and the people who actually cared about him like Iwa-Chan and (f/n) and the other members of their new volleyball team.
He actually didn't know that he could be happier than he had been partying and sleeping with all kinds of different people, but (f/n) was just too good to be true. She never was the reason for his feelings of inferiority, never was the reason he felt useless - she was actually the newest, greatest form of relief for these feelings, always comforting him and reassuring him when he started to doubt himself.
She was like a remedy for bad things, only ever shedding light on situations that seemed so dark, and Oikawa couldn't have been more happy with someone.
So it wasn't hard for him to decide that he wanted to marry her, and it was the easiest thing in the world for him to ask her for her hand. And he swears he'd never been as happy in his life than when she said yes.
Their wedding day was stressful for Oikawa because he wanted everything to be perfect, but he was at a weird kind of ease at the same time, his heart light despite the racing of his thoughts.
"Oi, you ready, Shittykawa?" Oikawa looked up to see his best man/best friend, a small smile growing on his face at the sight of Iwa-Chan in his tux.
"Yeah," Oikawa breathed out. He laughed after saying it, and the smile on his face was one produced completely of mirth and contentment. "I don't think I've ever been so sure of anything in my life," he admitted.
Iwaizumi smiled wide at his best friend and brought his hand out to clap the taller boy's back. "Then let's go - I've got a bet with your mom that you're going to cry the second you see (f/n) and I'm excited to win it."
Oikawa looked at himself in the mirror one last time - straightened his tie, flattened his suit, winked at himself - and then turned to follow his best friend out to his wedding reception.
When he saw (f/n) walking down the isle he was sure this was the best decision of his life - giving up his life of being a bachelor to have a life of laughter with (f/n), to always be with (f/n) was worth it, would always be worth it, and he'd make the decision again and again if he had to.
happily ever after oh, how could I ask for more? a life time of laughter at the expense of the death of a bachelor.
