Yamaguchi was nervous as hell. Yeah, sometimes his anxiety made him a little too nervous for 'insignificant' things like family get togethers and school festivals and tests, but this was for real - he was going on a date with (f/n).

He had been pretty nervous when he asked her, stuttering a bit and pinching the inside of his hand, but he hadn't expected her to say yes. It was just a dare from Tsukki - Yamaguchi had lost a bet about Hinata and Kageyama, so he was dared to ask out the girl he'd been crushing on since he started going to Karasuno six months prior.

A harmless dare. (f/n) was going to say no - she was supposed to say no.

But she fucking smiled at Yamaguchi instead and told him that she'd love to go out with him that Saturday and then she walked away like it was nothing. Yamaguchi had gone pale and walked back to Tsukki with a petrified look.

"She said yes," he said once Tsukki asked him how it had gone. The blonde - very familiar with Yamaguchi's insane anxiety with girls and volleyball and everything, really, - told his friend that he'd help him plan the date and then walked to their classroom with a small smile on his face.

"It's about time," he whispered to himself.

So, on Saturday Yamaguchi got ready to meet (f/n) at the theater, his hands shaking the entire time his mom was trying to pick out his outfit.

"It's your first proper date," she'd said excitedly, her eyes wide and her hands clasped. "You've gotta let your mother help you pick out your outfit!"

Yamaguchi absolutely would not let his mother pick out his outfit and instead relied on Tsukki, who came over to be that typical friend who helped pep talk the dater and get them prepared for their date.

He did little pep talking, though, and instead helped Yamaguchi think of everything that could, in fact, go wrong, and the solutions to said bad situations. It was forty-five minutes of Yamaguchi shouting out scenarios and Tsukki firing off solutions - he had learned how to calm Yamaguchi in the most effective way, skipping all of the sugar coated words for straight up truths, only telling his best friend what he really needed to hear.

When it was time for Yamaguchi to leave he put on a pair of headphones like Tsukki's and played songs that helped calm him, songs that he listened to on the way to tournaments and walked to the small theater he and the girl were to meet at, arriving fifteen minutes earlier. It was one of the solutions to a bad situation - what if (f/n) showed up early? Yamaguchi would just have to show up even more early.

He was lucky to have left as early as he did because (f/n) was there just a few minutes after him, a warm smile on her face. "Do you like being early too?" she asked him, the smile still on her face.

Yamaguchi nodded, a nervous smile on his face. "Yeah - being late is disrespectful, and being on time calms my nerves." He didn't tell her that it helped with his anxiety, and instead lead her into the movie theater. They bought tickets for the next movie that was starting and bought a big thing of popcorn before they were making their way into the screening room.

They chose the best seats - they were a bit early so they got first pick - and (f/n) talked in her normal voice, Yamaguchi joining in when (f/n) would ask him questions or pause for his input. He was calming down, his anxieties dispersing a little with every joke and laugh from (f/n).

The movie started and (f/n) turned to the screen excitedly, and Yamaguchi definitely didn't spend most of the movie look at her. (He totally did.)

*****

The movie had been an animated one, one that the two of them knew would be appropriate and not at all uncomfortable for them, and it had (f/n) giggling the entire time - a noise that left Yamaguchi feeling better and better every time he heard it.

He had built up enough courage to grab (f/n)'s hand about halfway through, and he was filled with warmth when (f/n) turned to smile at him and squeezed his hand back.

They walked out of the theater hand in hand, and Yamaguchi was nervous about where to take her next.

(f/n) saved the day and pulled Yamaguchi towards the small park down the street. "This ice cream stand has really good ice cream," she said, smile radiant as she pulled Yamaguchi towards the small shop. "They've got a bunch of flavors, and great toppings."

Yamguchi smiled, "That sounds nice." (f/n) smiled wide and continued pulling Yamaguchi to the park.

Yamaguchi felt light as a feather, his anxieties almost fully forgotten now because (f/n) was smiling and holding his hand and making him feel so good.

They got their cones from the ice cream shop and then sat at a bench together to enjoy their cones. They were talking lightly through their mouthfuls of ice cream.

"Oh, hang on," Yamaguchi said, reaching out a napkin to wipe ice cream off of (f/n)'s nose. The girl was rather surprised, but it passed and she moved her cone to bump Yamaguchi's nose, and then she moved a napkin to wipe it off.

They were silent for a moment and then they both burst into laughter, their cheeks red once they were finished. They finished their cones and then headed towards their homes, hand clasped together again.

They parted on the street they both lived on because Yamaguchi's house was on the opposite end from (f/n)'s.

"I had a really good time, Yamaguchi," (f/n) said, her smile rather shy now.

"S-So we could do this some other time?" Yamaguchi asked, fingers scratching his cheek.

(f/n) smiled and nodded. "Yeah, I'd love that." She stood up on her tippy toes and kissed his cheek before pulling away from him completely. "I'll see you at school."

She walked away with a little wave, and Yamaguchi was left stood on the corner until he could feel his legs again.

When he walked through the front door to his home he was met with his mother, smile wide on her face. "Date was good, honey?"

"Mom," he said in a quiet voice, sliding off his shoes. "It was so good."
