(f/n) could remember a time when Sugawara Koushi wasn't right beside her. They'd been friends since before either of them could remember; their mothers had been best friends since high school, so when they both had children in the same year it was only typical that the children were best friends too.

They spent their childhood years in the space between their homes, playing pretend like (f/n) was a princess and Koushi the prince sent to save her. When (f/n) pouted and said that she felt lazy just sitting there Koushi was ecstatic to put on the crown and let (f/n) play the part of the fearless warrior sent to save him.

When Koushi became interested in volleyball, (f/n) did too. They stopped playing pretend and stayed outside until their curfews passing the ball back and forth, helping each other with their forms and ball handling. When Koushi decided he liked setting best (f/n) decided that she like spiking best, and they became the best eight year old volleyball team on the block.

When middle school came around (f/n) had a feeling of anxiousness in her body at all times; she was preparing herself for the day Koushi would leave her for a new, better friend. Most likely a boy who he could sit with and talk about boy things with - things (f/n) would never understand or be able to help Koushi with. She was surprised when he didn't. They continued on being best friends, and they worked on homework together and walked to and from their own practices together and it was routine that (f/n) found herself loving more than anything.

During middle school Koushi had started to bulk up; his thin arms gained some mass, his voice became deeper, he managed to grow a few inches in height. None of that affected (f/n) at first; it all was a gradual changed to her since they were with each other everyday. There was no moment to her when Koushi was still like a child and then was more more than that; it happened periodically which made it harder to notice.

High school, however, was a whole new level for (f/n).

She spent her first year of high school much like she spent that of middle school; anxious that Koushi would find somebody better, but this time in the form of another girl. Koushi was an angel in the looks department, and girls didn't take long to realize that he was one in the personality department too. He wasn't flocked by teenage girls everywhere he walked, but sometimes when (f/n) would walk into his classroom for lunch she'd find him sitting at his desk with a few admirers around him.

It was harder and harder for them to spend time together in school, especially with them both becoming starters for their volleyball teams, but Koushi put forward extra effort to spend time with her outside of school. They spent nights together at each other's homes, falling asleep in piles of blankets on the floor, and started opting out of their family dinners to go out just the two of them together.

When people at school talked about how cute they were as a couple (f/n) told them with a large smile that Koushi was simply just her best friend. She felt a small pang in her chest every time she spoke those words, but she said them anyways, all three years of high school.

"Are you going to confess to Sugawara today?"

"I don't know, I heard that he's got a crush on another girl.."

(f/n) sighed at the conversation she was overhearing and hurried up getting her things around from her volleyball locker so she wouldn't have to listen to it anymore. When she left the club room she was met with Koushi, who had only just finished in the boy's club room.
