soulmate au in which you hear a static all of your life until you hear your soulmate speak

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 Sometimes she wishes she could hear music more clearly - she could hear the vocals, and the larger, more important parts of the instrumentals, but she'd never heard the background noises, the ones musicians put there for the people who could really hear - the people who had met their soulmates. She just wants to hear the other parts, the ones only certain people, the lucky people, get to experience.
(f/n) had grown accustomed to the constant buzz in the back of her mind - all throughout the beginning of her life she had problems hearing, problems focusing through the static noise, through the constant buzz everyone in the world heard. But she grew used to it, and now it was just there. First thing she heard in the morning, last thing she hears at night, through the dreams she dreams and the songs she listens to and the shows she watches - the faint humming was there.
Everyone with a soulmate always heard it. The humming and buzzing stuck with all of these people until either they died, their soulmate died, or they heard their soulmate speak - there were no other expectations, and that meant that most people were stuck with the buzzing for the entirety of their lives.
However, (f/n) was lucky enough to be one of the people that not only found her soulmate, but found them early enough in life to enjoy her young adulthood with actual hearing.
The day she met Teru she was a mess - it was snowing, and she'd fallen on her ass three times already that day, her head was pounding, and she had two tests she had to study for when all she wanted to do was go home and curl up in her blankets and sleep away her headache. She had been walking home from the convenience store - she had to get comfort food if she was going to make herself study - and she was sure that she had resting bitch face on in that moment - she felt like shit. The buzz seemed worse today, a lot more distracting than usual, and she figured it was because of her headache, but she didn't care - she just wanted to relax.
The only good part was that her sweats were warm, had huge pockets for all of her belongings, her headphones were blocking out everything the static wasn't, and her messy hair was shielding her ears from the cold. She wasn't paying attention - her eyes were on her feet, looking out for any patches of ice that wanted to randomly pop up and drop her on her ass again, so it wasn't a surprise when she ran into something - or rather, someone.
She was on her ass again in seconds, and grumbling quietly to herself. She took off her headphones, hoping to hear an explanation, or get her own apology across. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry," she mumbled, standing up to brush off her ass. "I really can't do anything in this weather - I'm gonna fall on my ass no matter what." She hadn't heard a response, so she looked down, and there was the person she bumped into, sprawled on the ground still, his eyes wide and his mouth open. "What?"
"I-I can hear," he said, and suddenly, (f/n) could too.
The static cut off immediately upon hearing him speak, and she could finally, finally hear. Well, she could always hear, but now she heard it all clearly, no static in her ears, nothing to block it all. She heard a song playing from inside the cafe, all the 'oohs' and the 'ahhs' and the guitar strumming behind the guitar she usually heard. There were cars humming and people laughing and that guy talking, but no static.
Oh right, the guy.
"Sorry," she mumbled, and then she was reaching down to help him up. "It's - weird, being able to hear it all." The guy smiled, laughed, something that (f/n) heard a little too clearly, something that made her head a little more clear, her heart beat faster. Her headache was going away, which was making her mood far better. And she'd totally just met her soulmate, which was definitely a plus to the entire day - her bruised butt was starting to seem like a nice trade in for this one event. Against her better judgement - she still had tests to study for, homework to do, emotions to eat - she smiled wide at the boy and held out her hand. "I'm (l/n) (f/n). You wanna come back to my place, listen to all kinds of music and talk?"
"Terushima Yuuji - and that sounds fantastic, but would it be totally weird if I called my grandma? She'd kill me if she found out I met you and didn't tell her the second it happened."
(f/n) laughed, nodded, and he pulled out his phone to call his grandmother as they walked.
There first few hours together probably weren't spent like most soulmate's. They did talk a little, and (f/n) learned a little about him - he was totally a grandma's boy, since he'd lived with her his entire life until college, he played volleyball in high school, his favorite music was j-pop, and yes, the tongue-piercing was very real - but besides that, and (f/n) relaying a bit of her own information, they didn't talk.
(f/n) felt like a loser when she suggested it, but she listened to the song everyday of her life and she just needed to really hear it - to experience it.
She and Terushima were going to be perfect, it seemed (duh, they're soulmates) because he agreed immediately, saying he had a few songs he wanted to actually hear too.
So, they made a playlist.
(f/n)'s favorite songs and Terushima's, and they laid themselves out - (f/n) across her couch and Terushima on the floor just below the couch - and they listened. To the songs, and in between them, each other's breathing. They commented on each other's favorite songs, telling them that they were nice or beautiful or dumb ((f/n) was the culprit there, but she was just teasing,) but other than that they were silent - listening. It was calming, relaxing. The pain (f/n) had felt all day, the tension seeped from her shoulders, and she was asleep before she could even register she was getting there.
She hadn't studied, hadn't done her homework, hadn't even said goodnight to Terushima. She wasn't worried, though - she just felt like it all was going to be okay.
*****
When she woke up next it was three in the morning, if the clock in her living room was anything to go by, and she was alone. On her coffee table where Terushima's phone had sat silent all night was a note, and when she read it she couldn't fight her smile.
'Hey - you fell asleep, and I hadn't gotten permission to stay, so I figured I'd just go. Call me later today? I'd love to hang out and listen to music some more, if you'd want to :)'
The note ended with his number and a cute little signature followed by a heart, and (f/n) felt her heart start beating faster.
Later that morning, after some more sleep and then a cup of coffee, (f/n) dialed the number and lifted her phone to her ear, waiting.
It was answered barely after the first ring, by a familiar voice. "Hello?"
"Hey, I can't hang tonight because I neglected all of my studies last night, but I'd love to meet up tomorrow, if you've got the time?"
She could practically hear the smile in Terushima's voice when he spoke next. "Yeah, yeah, that'll be amazing, I'm looking forward to it."
(f/n) let herself smile. "Me too."
