"It should've been me," John whispered.

"No, it's okay." Paul patted his shoulder, wincing in pain.

"It should've been me," he said again. "It should've been me!"

"John, stop it!" he ordered. "Freaking out isn't going to help either of us right now!" He let out a pained gasp. "Please calm down, for me."

"I will, oh god, I'm so sorry." John stroked his hair as the sirens blared in the distance. "That smug bastard is just sitting there and reading a book."

"Tosser." Paul patted his hand. "Again, I'm sorry I pushed you. I just didn't want you getting shot."

"I know, Paulie, I know." He kissed his cheek. "I love you." He quickly gave the finger to the man later identified as Mark David Chapman, so he turned to glare at them. "Take this and shove it up your ass."

He just went back to his book.
