"It has to be perfect." I stress, rearranging the decorations on the table.
"Chres, honey, you've moved them seventeen times. Relax, she'll love it." Maya puts her arm around my shoulder.
I glance at the clock, "I better get going. She's gonna be here any second."
"You're not staying for the party?" She asks.
"No, Melanie said she would rather not see me tonight. I'm taking her to get the annulment tomorrow morning." I answer. "I'm gonna home and pack my stuff."
"But once she finds out about the surprise, she'll change her mind." Shay tells me.
"She won't. She didn't after her surprise this morning." I frown.

After filling Melanie's room with balloons, I place her gifts on the dresser.
I hope she likes all this.
I quietly leave her room, not returning for an hour.
When I do, I knock on the door. Melanie pulls it open, wearing my shirt and her sweat pants. She has the card I gave her in her hands.
"Don't shut the door." I stick my foot out, stopping it.
"What do you want, Chres?" She asks.
"I just wanted to tell you happy birthday, Melanie. I love you." I smile a little.
She keeps a straight face, "Thanks. Can you go now?"
"I was also wondering if you wanted to see me tonight. I know they were talking about taking you to dinner." I keep the surprise party a secret.
"Not really, I don't want to be around you at the moment." She says.
"Oh. So I guess you still want to separate?" I frown.
"Yep." She nods.
"I guess I'll take you tomorrow morning." I walk away before my heart can be broken any further.
She really doesn't love me anymore.

"But Chres-"
"I'm going now." I grab my jacket, heading out the door.
I drive back to Ray's house, where Melanie and Maria are walking out of the house. Melanie looks so beautiful.
The dress really did fit perfectly.
"Why do I have to be all dressed up to go to dinner?" Melanie complains.
"Just get in the car." Maria looks over at my car as I get out.
I make my way to Melanie, just to wish her a happy birthday and tell her I love her again.
She keeps her eyes on me, crossing her arms as I approach.
"Thank you for the dress." She mumbles.
