"Professor, I do find it of the utmost importance to see Harry before I get sorted. You see, I'm not quite sure he knows I'm even here." I explained to the grey-haired Professor and she shot me an apologetic look. She thought for a second. "Oh, Dear." Her eyes widened as she spoke. "I'm afraid that won't be possible, Miss Potter," She sighs. "The first years are almost done sorting, if only you would have said so before. Of course, we could have postponed this meeting."
Great, I thought. The one time I wanted to make a good first impression was the one time I didn't actually have to.
"That's absolutely no problem, then." I couldn't hide the disappointment in my voice as I spoke. "I assume I should get going, Thank you so much, Professor McGonagall." A smile formed on my face and she nodded in return as she opened the door for me.
"Best of luck, Miss Potter."
I took a deep breath when I stood in front of the big doors that lead towards the Great Hall. Nothing would be able to prepare me for what I was about to walk into, not the best pep talk by the best pep talker could. Which is why I didn't waste any more time thinking about it and with the audible exhale of my breath I pushed the door open.
"Y/n Potter!" Just as I stepped foot into the hall, my name was called out by Professor McGonagall. I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion at the Professor standing in front of me as if we didn't just have a conversation in her office ten minutes ago.
However, how McGonagall could be in two places at once wasn't my biggest concern at the moment. She was a witch, I'm sure she had her ways.
Instead, as I was walking through the rows of murmuring students, my eyes were searching the room for Harry. I scanned the Gryffindor tables, recognising them by their signature colours.
It was only when I had almost reached the front of the room that my (y/e/c) eyes met his green ones. I couldn't quite read his facial expression. A mixture of confusion and surprise, shock even?
There was a lot of chatting going on between the students once my name was announced, I heard it being whispered at least a dozen times, followed by a gasp here and there. "That's enough!" Professor McGonagall shouted and it became quiet as soon as the words had left her mouth. She shot me a reassuring smile and I returned it.
Only breaking eye contact with Harry for a split second I sat down on the stool and the sorting hat was placed on my head. "Merlin's beard.. there sure is a lot going on in there right now!" It spoke. "Another Potter.. well, let's see. Ambitious, yes.. courageous, I'm sure of it.. but not stupid, either." It took a moment to think. "You know what you want, and you know just how to get it; a cunning one this is. I know just where to put you!" It then yelled out loud. "Slytherin!"
Harry's eyes widened. I knew this wasn't good news the second he diverted his attention from me to the two students sitting around him, harshly whispering about what had just happened.
For a second everything was silent. Everyone was wondering the same thing; what was a Potter doing in Slytherin? Then, with the flick of a switch, the Slytherin table began cheering, roaring and whistling. Yelling my name and waving me towards them.
I threw a last glance at Harry, who was still not looking at me, stood up confidently and walked towards the Slytherin table that McGonagall had pointed out to me.
Green suited me better than red anyway, I thought and a small smirk spread across my face.
My eyes scanned the Slytherin rows searching for familiar faces. To my disappointment, neither River nor Emilie were sat at the table. Still, I was welcomed with handshakes and laughter as I sat down on one of the few seats that weren't occupied yet.
"Wren Inkwood!" The girl next to me extended her hand towards me and I shook it with a smile. She shot one back and moved a little closer to me.
"How very unexpected," a sarcastic voice a few seats down commented and my attention fell on the blonde boy from earlier.
I couldn't have been surprised, really. The way he acted the sorting hat probably didn't even touch his head yet and already placed that toad in Slytherin. "How very expected," I replied with a smirk and rolled my eyes.
Before I could say anything else a hand on my shoulder made me jump and I turned around. "Let's talk." Without waiting for a reply my brother grabbed my arm and dragged me out of the Great Hall.
