My loud alarm pulls me out of my peaceful dream and brings me back into reality. I groan as I roll over and look at the time. 6:45. I groan again and close my eyes again. I don't want to get out of bed. Not yet. I want to go back to my sweet dream where there was no work.
"Alyssa! Are you up?" My housemate, Yana, calls. "No!" I yell back. My bedroom door opens within a second. "Girl, get out of your bed before I come and get you," She says. I open my eyes and look at her. I see a serious look on her face.
"I don't want to get out of bed," I tell her. Yana groans and walks away. I get confused. I thought she wanted to get me out of bed?
But then she walks back into my bedroom, holding a glass of water. "Get out right now, before I throw all this water on you," she threatens. I roll my eyes. "No, you won't," I say, calling her bluff. Yana grins, "Your call."
Before I can get away, she empties the entire glass of water on my head. I scream when the cold water touches my warm skin and jump out of my bed.
"Are you insane?!" I shout. Yana starts to laugh, "I warned you!" I look at her with a serious look on my face. But she can't stop laughing, "You really thought I wouldn't do it, didn't you?" I groan when I walk into the bathroom to get a towel. "Yes I did!"
Yana follows me while she keeps laughing. "At least I got you out of your bed!" She laughs. I dry my face and my hair with a towel and look at her. "It is not funny!" I say, fighting my smile. Yana looks at me, "Yes it is and you know it!" She can't stop laughing.
"You would've done the same to me!" She says. I can't fight it anymore and start to laugh as well. "Okay, you're right," I say, "But that doesn't mean you get away with this." I throw the towel in the laundry basket and walk back into my room.
"Get away with what? Getting you out of bed so you won't be late for work so you won't get fired?" Yana asks with a smile. "The world doesn't end when I lose my job," I tell her while I open my closet and grab a pair of black pants and a white blouse.
"No, but I won't pay the bills on my own!" Yana says. Her smile is nowhere to be found and the look in her eyes is serious. She knows she has to be serious with me when I talk about my job. She knows how much I hate it and want to quit, but I can't be unemployed. Yana is a chef. She is really good and has a good job, but she can't pay the bills of our house on her own. So I can't quit my job. At least, not until I found a job that pays as well as my current job.
I know Yana for almost ten years now. We met at high school and became best friends. When we went to college, we both went our own way. I wanted to become a journalist and she wanted to become a chef. But even though we didn't see each other at school, we hang out a lot and stayed in touch.
We both graduated and got a job in the same year. Since we were both single and wanted to move out with our parents, we found a house and moved in together. Since then, it has been a dream living together. Our house is small, but big enough for the two of us.
"Earth to Alyssa!" Yana says. I come back into the real world and look at her. "Sorry, what?" I ask her. Yana smiles, "I said I have a late night shift, but I put some leftovers in the fridge for you to eat for dinner." I smile thankfully, "Thanks. You are the best!" "I know," Yana laughs and sticks out her tongue.
An hour later, I park my car in the parking lot of my work. I work for a girlsmagazine for several years now. I mostly create small quizzes and interviews with small artists. When I applied for this job, I dreamed of interviewing the biggest artists in the world, but sadly, that didn't go as planned.
My lovely boss Finn doesn't want to give me these kind of big interviews, sadly. I am sure he is good at his job, since he is the boss, but he is not likable at all. I don't know one colleague who likes him.
I enter the office and walk over to my desk. Another thing I dreamed of but didn't go as planned is the office. I dreamed about having my own office, but sadly we have one big office with all of the colleagues. Only Finn has his own, private office.
I put my bag on the ground and turn my computer on. I walk over to the small kitchen and make myself a cup of coffee. I can't start my day without a cup of coffee. Some may say I am addicted to it.
"Good morning, Alyssa," My colleague Sophie greets me. I smile at her, "good morning, Sophie. How was your weekend?" "It was truly unbelievable!" She says, showing me her hand. On her finger shines a ring with a beautiful blue diamond. "No way! He purposed?!" I ask. Sophie nods proudly, "He did!" She makes herself a cup of coffee.
"Tell me everything!" I tell her. Sophie smiles and we walk back to our desks. Luckily, her desk is close to mine. "We went to this incredible hotel. Everything was perfect. He even got us the best room of the building!" She tells me. Her eyes shine and her smile warms my heart when she tells me about the entire weekend.
"After we had dinner in this chique restaurant, we went for a walk on the beach. The sun was about to set and the entire sky was orange with a hint of pink," Sophie tells me as we take a seat. "It sounds like a movie," I say. Sophie smiles, "Oh, it was! It was just like in a movie! The sun set, birds sang and then he got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife."
Her eyes tear up as she thinks back to probably the most amazing moment of her life. I smile and stand up. I hug her and pet her back. "I am so happy for you," I tell her. Sophie laughs, "Thank you! I am so happy too!" We let go of each other. "Congratulations," I tell her, "I will see the invitation in my mail."
I laugh and take a seat again. Sophie laughs, "Of course! I wouldn't want to have the wedding without you!" "That's so sweet," I say thankfully. "But you have to invite me to yours as well!" She warns with a playful smile. I start to laugh, "Sure! But you might have to wait a few centuries." Sophie laughs with me, "No way, we will find you someone. Not just someone, we will find you the most amazing guy in the world!"
I roll my eyes and take a sip of my coffee. "If you say so," I smile. "Alyssa, I will not die before I attend to your perfect wedding. That includes a perfect guy!" Sophie says. "Good luck finding him," I laugh. "I take that as a challenge. So, challenge accepted," Sophie smiles. I laugh and roll my eyes, "Whatever!"
