Part Forty-Six 사십육

Taehyung and I arrive at my grandma's house. It looks even smaller than I remember. I open the door and go inside. Taehyung follows me. Looking at his face, I see he is a bit nervous, just like I am. I haven't seen my grandma in a long time and now I am here to have my final moments with her...

We go into the living room, where we see her, lying in bed. My mom told me they moved her bed to the living room, so she wouldn't have to go all the way to her bedroom. My grandma lives alone. My grandpa died when I was a baby, so my grandma has been living alone for a long time. She always took care of herself and didn't need anyone. Until now, I guess.

"Ali!" My grandma says once she sees me. She sits up in her bed and opens her arms for me. She smiles, but she looks really weak. I will always remember her as a fighter, but seeing her like this, really breaks my heart. Her body shakes as she moves, her skin looks a bit grey and she lost weight, a lot of weight.

Before I start to cry already, I walk over to her and hug her tight. "You came," my grandma says. I feel tears burning in my eyes as I hold her. "Of course I came," I tell her. We let go of each other and I see tears in her eyes. "Oh, don't cry," she says. I smile, but the first few tears roll down my cheek. My grandma puts her hands on my cheeks and wipes away my tears. "Don't cry, you will only make me cry as well," she smiles. I laugh and try to hold the rest of my tears inside.

My grandma looks around me, to Taehyung. "Oh wow, who is this handsome man?" She asks. I laugh and step aside. Taehyung walks closer to us and smiles kindly. "My name is Taehyung," he says, "It's lovely to meet you, ma'am." He shakes her hand and bows a little. "Look at this gentleman!" My grandma smiles. She pulls his arm, so he gets closer to her. She wraps her arms around him and hugs him tight. "Just give me a hug," she says. Taehyung laughs a little and hugs her back.

When they let go, my grandma takes a moment to look at him. "It's amazing to meet you too," she says. Then she looks at me. "Do you want something to drink? Or to eat, perhaps?" She asks. I smile, "I will get it for us, thank you." I grab two chairs and put them next to her bed.

I look at Taehyung. "Do you want something?" I ask him, "The second chance for some tea?" Taehyung laughs, "Yeah, sure." I look at my grandma, "Do you want something?" "I would like some tea as well, please," she says. I nod and go into the kitchen. While I fill the kettle with water, I hear my grandma talk to Taehyung. "Do you know the best thing about having to stay in bed? Everyone does everything for you," She says, "Did you know I haven't cleaned my own house for two weeks? Alyssa's mother did it for me." I hear Taehyung and my grandma laugh. "Maybe I should stay in bed as well and let others do my job," Taehyung jokes. My grandma laughs, "That's the spirit!"

I come back into the living room and put our cups with tea on the table. I take a seat in the chair next to Taehyung and look at my grandma. "How do you feel?" I ask her. She smiles, "Well, you're here and you even brought a handsome young man. So I am doing pretty good!" I smile wide, "That's great. I am really happy to be back." I put my hand on Taehyung's which rests on his lap. He holds my hand and smiles at me.

I look back at my grandma. "How are the doctors treating you? Are you in a lot of pain?" I ask her. She smiles, "I am doing fine, darling. They told me I will have a week or two tops, but they will do anything to make sure it will all be painless." I feel tears burning in my eyes. She talks about it like it is nothing, but we're talking about her death... It's not nothing.

"So there is nothing they can do to push it back a little?" I ask her. "You mean like, let me live a little longer? Darling, I've had the most beautiful ninety years on this earth," she says. I sigh, "But a few more beautiful weeks can't hurt, right?" My grandma smiles and puts her hand on mine. "Darling, my husband is waiting for me. You didn't know him, but he didn't like waiting! I think he will come get me himself if I stay away for more weeks," She jokes. I smile at her, but feel a tear roll down my cheek.
