There was something wrong with that candy apple, a taste that was all weird. She knew it the moment the flavor touched her tongue, but then of course it was too late.
She could have seen it coming too, if only she had been paying attention. For years now she had been so focused on acquiring power and then keeping it, that she hadn't noticed the growing displeasure of those around her. The jealousy, the envy, the ambition. She hadn't noticed that some were watching, learning from both her successes and her failures. Waiting to take her place.
One candy apple, and their plans were set into motion.
