Right in the center of the world stood a giant tree, for all the world appearing like an ancient tree that just happened to keep growing.
The truth, as usual, was a little more complicated than that. Far below the ground, where the common eye couldn't see, the tree's roots kept growing on and on, but not solely to keep the tree alive. Between its roots, big and small, a creature was trapped, caged in an attempt to protect the world from it.
It hadn't breathed in millennia, and yet it still lived, slumbering, waiting for the day it could escape.
