Every witch had to start somewhere. While the talent for magic was inborn, the most important parts in mastering this gift were a good teacher and lots of practice.
This particular student had, unfortunately, neither.
Her mentor was an older witch who was more interested in using her apprentice to fetch her both coffee and potions alike, and the apprentice herself just couldn't be bothered to use her spare time to put what little lessons she got into practice.
Even the fact that she regularly sprouted a tail or antlers because she couldn't keep her shifting powers under control didn't do much to motivate her.
