There was a certain magic hidden in the dark hours of the night. Many paid no attention to this, but the night witch had a fondness for weaving illusionary spells out of starlight, moonlight and the dark spaces in between.
The illusions cast this way were certainly not the strongest, for that honor was for the spells distilled out of the sunspots dancing between the leaves of trees. They were the prettiest however, and even the shine of the stars scattered across the waves of the ocean could not compare to them.
And in a world where many ugly things would rear their heads, little pretty things could be sorely needed.
