Like every young child, he had often been asked what he wanted to be when he grew up during his childhood. The answer had always been the same: a paladin.
And now, now that the day of his induction into the order had finally arrived, fate showed once again how cruel it could be. The majestic building that the order of paladins called its headquarters was completely, utterly destroyed, the smoke still slowly rising from the rubble.
And as much as he searched the wreckage, he could not find a single soul.
His very first day, and it seemed he was suddenly the last paladin remaining.
A/N: This chapter was inspired by The Superlatives: Aetherfall, which is an interactive novel I can wholeheartedly recommend!
