He worried as he witnessed his brother shut out the world, digging deeper into books without caring about anything else. He worried as the reading turned into experimenting, with his brother repeatedly putting his health at risk in pursuit of distilling eternal life or turning metal into gold.
The worry turned to sadness as the distance between them grew, and it no longer felt like they truly were brothers.
Later still, the sadness grew into a deep despair as his alchemy loving sibling disappeared off of the face of the earth completely.
Only years later did they meet again, an old man and his brother, who had barely aged a day.
