Any and all magic could be said to hold the power of life and death. And yet, only one witch in the entire world truly held the power of death.
A long time ago, every living being had been immortal. For some time, that was only a blessing. Every living creature still procreated, however, and so soon enough they were faced with an issue of overpopulation.
None could rise to this challenge, except to propose horribly unfair "solutions". One witch decided to go behind their backs, and called the reapers into existence. Now every being had lost their immortality, even the witch herself.
With those limitations life gained something new instead: a value only fleeting things could possess.
