During the free period, Joel was teaching Bobby and Cole maths. Lizzy sat with them with her level of homework, asking Joel once in a while when she didn't understand.
Joel was pretty smart. He was a fast learner and he enjoyed studying. His parents had been giving him books to read since he was a toddler. His mum started buying him non-fiction books in year three. Bobby, Cole, and Lizzy couldn't relate.
'9 times 9 is...' Joel started.
'Um...' Cole needed a second. '81.'
'Okay, so, 99 times 9 is...'
Cole thought for a moment. Counting. Counting. '881.'
'No, count again.'
'...891... I miscount just one and it's wrong... I hate maths.'
'Hey freaks!' shouted Sam. Sam's three friends laughed behind him.
Bobby stood up, but Joel pulled him down. 'Mrs Burberry will be here,' Joel whispered.
Bobby looked around quickly. 'I don't see her.'
'Trust me. She will.'
'Are you guys freaks? And deaf? Why are you so quiet? Bobby, scared? Are you scared?' he riled.
Bobby wanted to get up and punch him in the face, but Joel held him firm.
'Look, the freaks are studying, what a nerd!' Sam said with laughter. He dared to seize their books and rip them apart. He pulled Bobby by the collar. '...Scumbags like you don't deserve to be in school! All of you are stupid, depressing, dip--'
'Samuel Lorry!' shouted a stern voice of Mrs Burberry. 'Let go of him and come here this instant!'
Sam's face paled. His eyes opened wide straight at Bobby. He let him go with a grudge.
'Come with me to the Headmaster's Office, Samuel,' said the teacher. 'I am tired of your misbehaviour!'
Sam begrudged the group. He followed the teacher.
Sam's friends stayed behind in shame. When Sam was gone, they dropped this tomfoolery and walked away.
'Thanks, mate,' Bobby said.
'How did you know she'll be around?' Cole asked.
'Mrs Burberry is always checking the infirmary on a free period. She likes to talk to Ms Sevoy. So she'd pass by.'
'How did you know about that?' Lizzy asked in curiosity.
'I just notice it every day. Don't you all do?' Joel asked in confusion.
'Nope,' they said together.
'I don't even care what the teachers do,' Bobby said.
'Yeah well, that, will absolutely end up with you in detention, Bobs,' Joel said in a smirk.
