Au- soulmate

On your sixteenth birthday, a paper crane shows up. They connect you to your soulmate. The color or colors of your crane are the same as your soulmate's crane. No one knows how they get to you, but they always show up on your sixteenth birthday without a doubt.

Well, today was Virgil's sixteenth birthday. Though most people looked forward to this day, Virgil wasn't. He was scared to find out who his soulmate was. He's also not sure if he even has a soulmate. He's always been an outcast and doesn't have many friends. There was only one person he wanted it to be and if it's not he'll be very disappointed.

Reluctantly, Virgil got out of bed. He saw a box on his desk that hadn't been there when he went to sleep. He knew it had the paper crane in it. Deciding to ignore it, for now, he got dressed and got ready for school.

Ugh, school. He despised school. It was full of bullies and rude teachers. People thought he was an emo trouble maker, but in reality, he was just an anxious boy who happened to be an emo. Despite what people thought, he was actually a good student, though the teachers hated him for some reason. Maybe it was because he didn't show up to class half the time and never participated in class.

After getting dressed, Virgil did his makeup and put his finished homework and classwork in his backpack. He grabbed a few granola bars, throwing them in his backpack.

When he was all ready for school he looked at the box that held his soulmate paper crane, debating opening it. He couldn't bring him to open it yet. He was just too nervous. Grabbing the box he put it in his backpack to open later.

Zipping up his bag, he looked at the time, noticing he's about to miss the bus. He raised out of the front door and down the street. He skidded up to the bus stop just in time to jump onto the bus right before the bus doors closed. Some kids snickered and whispered as he made his way to his usual seat in the back of the bus.

A few stops later, Virgil's friends Remus and Roman got on and sat in the back with him.

"Hey, V," Remus greeted as he slid past Virgil to sit by the window.

"Hi, Re," Virgil responded.

"Happy birthday, Virgil," Roman said, sitting across the bus aisle.

"Oh right happy birthday," Remus said.

"Oh, you guys actually remembered that huh?" Virgil said.

"Of course," Roman said. "It's the big birthday. So what colors is it?" He asked, hoping it was the same as his. He's had a crush on Virgil for a very long time.

"I'm not sure," Virgil muttered with a shrug.

"What do you mean?" Roman questioned. "Did you not find the box or something?"

"No. I found it. I just haven't opened it..."

"Why not?" Remus asked.

"Yeah, don't you want to know who your soulmate is?" Roman added.

Virgil just shrugged.

"Oh come on, Virge."

"...I'm not sure I'm ready to know yet..." Virgil muttered.

"Why not?" Remus asked. "Everyone looks forward to this day. Logan and I liked each other for a long time, but denied it until my birthday when I got my crane and we found out we were soulmates."

"Yeah, I know. The same thing happened with Patton and Janus. Can we just drop it for now?"

"Fine," Roman and Remus said at the same time.
