Description: In this world, soulmates are a thing – but gay relationships are not. Historically, soulmates have only been males and females together. Never male and male or female and female. When one day a boy looks at another boy and they realize they are soulmates... their lives get complicated. They realize they need to keep a secret... maybe for the rest of their lives. Elliot's POV

"Is it just me or is the sky greyer than usual?"

I leaned forward slightly to look up and nodded, "It's cloudy so the sky is actually grey."

James nodded as he continued to stare out of the window.

James couldn't see the color blue, because that was the color of his soulmate's eyes.

It was strange but it was the way things always had been. Everyone was born with a soulmate, except for a few cases. Those who did have a soulmate couldn't see whatever color their soulmate's eyes were. It didn't matter the shade-- if your soulmate had light blue eyes, you couldn't see any shade of blue. Until you made eye contact with your soulmate for the first time. Supposedly it was an amazing feeling, looking into your soulmate's eyes and being able to see their eye color in their eyes and everywhere else.

I was already a junior in high school and I hadn't met my soulmate, so I figure she didn't go to my school and I'd meet her later in life. So I just wandered around, not really having any expectations to meet her.

I couldn't see the color brown, whatever the color looked like. I couldn't see the color of brown eyes, most tree trunks, dirt, my own hair, and some of my clothes. Before you met your soulmate, the color of their eyes appeared grey. Sometimes it was hard to tell the difference between actual grey and the grey from the missing color, but as you got older you figured it out.

As we pulled into our usual parking spot, James nudged me, "Gray and Ana are gonna be a little late, she just texted me."

"Alright, wanna just chill in here till they get here? I don't wanna go into the school yet."

He nodded and laughed lightly, "I was thinking the same thing."

We both went on our phones, waiting for our friends.

James, Ana, and I had been friends since kindergarten, we were all really close. Gray moved to our town in the eighth grade and low and behold, it turned out Gray and Ana were soulmates. Ana couldn't see brown, like me, and she was so excited she tried to describe it to me but it was all jibberish because she was too excited. It was really funny, honestly. Since then, Gray had been in our group and he haf gotten really close to us.

"Bro," James whined, "when will we meet our soulmates? I'm pretty sure I've made eye contact with everyone in this damn school."

I laughed and ruffled his hair, "You'll meet her, just be patient."

He sat up straight and looked at me, "How? I doubt you are actually patient, you're just good at acting patient."

He was right about that.

I rolled my eyes, "Believe what you want. Here come Gray and Ana."

They walked out of the lunch line and we all went to go find a table. We always waited for everyone before finding a table because we were all picky and had to choose a table together. It was crowded so we walked clumped up, me beside James, and Ana and Gray beside each other right behind us.

I was looking around for an open table when I looked at the group walking towards us. I was pretty sure they were seniors. I looked at the boy in the front of the group and at the same time, he looked at me and... I stopped in my tracks, causing Gray to run into me.
