I stood outside her room and peered in the window. I saw that she was sleeping soundly. She looked so peaceful. I took a deep breath and crept into the room. I smiled at her as she awoke slowly.
"Hey." I said as she slowly sat up.
She looked away from me and stared at her hands.
"I'm sorry I frightened you." I said gently.
"You were rather inappropriate." she said shortly.
"What did Caleb say to you?" I asked her.
"That you are my doctor and will be taking care of me. You overstepped the mark and it won't happen again." she stated.
"You....have no idea....who I am?" I stuttered.
"I just told you, you're my doctor." she said.
I stared at her. I had no idea what to tell her. Should I tell her the truth or should I allow her time to heal and hope that she would remember for herself. I smiled uncomfortably at her. It wasn't her fault that she couldn't remember me, I didn't want her to see how much she was hurting me. I sat for a moment, deep in thought. I couldn't bear it, I had to help her remember me.
"I'll feed Koda for you later so you don't have to worry about him." I reassured her.
"How do you know about Koda?" she frowned.
"I live with you." I told her gently.
"You do?!" she exclaimed.
I nodded. I watched closely as she stared at me, a look of fascination on her face.
"Why do you live with me, are we friends?" she asked eventually.
"Sort of." I said quietly.
"Have we been friends for a long time?" she asked.
"About a year, we met through working here together." I told her.
She frowned at me.
"Do you remember that?" I asked hopefully.
"I know that I work here, but I don't remember working with you." she replied quietly.
"Are you sure you're not mistaking me for someone else?" she added.
I turned around as the door opened and Caleb hovered in the doorway.
"I need to talk to you." he said as he looked at me.
I sighed and followed him out of the room.
"What now?!" I said impatiently.
"Are you sure you're doing the right thing?" he questioned.
"I don't know what you are talking about." I answered.
"Trying to get her to remember, her brain is trying to forget what happened because she can't cope with it, how do you know she'll be able to cope once she remembers." he pointed out.
"She's a strong person and I'll be there for her." I insisted.
"You're going to cause her pain." he argued.
"She knows about the accident anyway, remembering me will make no difference." I whispered.
"She doesn't remember the accident, she only knows it happened because I told her." he stated.
"So what exactly are you trying to say?!" I exclaimed.
"Give her time, let her remember in her own time, when she is ready to cope with it." he told me.
"Maybe you should keep your distance for a while." he added.
"I can't..." I started.
"It might be the best thing to do." he insisted.
"It's an impossible choice." I whispered to myself.
"Go home and get some rest, I'll look after her tonight and you can take over in the morning." he offered.
"You'll be able to think better when you have a clear head." he added.
I sighed and nodded.
"You can take my car." he said as he handed me the keys.
"Thanks." I said as walked away.
I made it home in record time. I looked around the house. It seemed so quiet without her. I threw myself onto the sofa. Koda jumped onto my lap. I smiled as he glared at me and jumped off again.
"I'm sorry I'm not your Mum." I told him.
I looked down at myself and saw that my clothes were still covered in Emma's blood. It seemed like ages since the accident. So much had happened since. I glanced at the clock and saw that it was late. I needed to shower and get to bed, I had to work in the morning.
