To be fair to Ethan he did slow down a little bit, but I still struggled to keep up.
"This way." he said as he changed direction as we heard her again.
I followed him and eventually we found a heavily pregnant woman sitting on the ground. Sweat was running down her brow as her face contorted in pain. Ethan glanced at me as he turned pale.
"We need to call an ambulance." he said as he quickly took his phone out of his pocket.
"Damn it no signal." he cursed.
"Me neither." I told him as I looked at my phone.
"We'll have to deliver the baby." he told me as he took off his jacket and rolled up his sleeves.
I watched as he knelt down next to her.
"I'm Ethan Hardy, I'm a doctor, can you tell me your name?" he asked her gently.
"Amy." she stated.
"How far gone are you?" he asked.
"Thirty five weeks." she told him.
"Have you been here long?" he said as he placed his jacket around her shoulders.
She shook her head.
"You're going to deliver the baby!" I said in disbelief.
"No....you are." he told me.
I stared at him as he moved so that he was sitting behind her, supporting her weight so that she could rest against him.
"I've never done anything like this before." I said starting to panic.
"Neither have I, you're the one that watches One Born Every Minute all the time." he grinned.
"Ethan...I can't." I protested.
"Yes you can, I have faith in you." he reassured me.
I took a deep breath and knelt down in front of Amy.
"Do you mind if I take a look?" I asked her.
She nodded as she winced in pain. I smiled slightly as I saw her take Ethan's hands and squeeze them tightly.
"Where's your partner?" Ethan asked, trying to distract her.
"He's fighting for the army in Iraq." she said breathlessly.
"What's his name?" he asked.
"Pete." she said.
"I can see the baby's head." I said nervously.
I glanced up at Ethan and saw that Amy was resting her head against his shoulder. She looked exhausted.
"I don't know what to do!" I said, beginning to panic.
"It's fine, you can do this." Ethan told me.
"I can't." I said, shaking my head.
"Yes you can, take a deep breath." he said.
I looked down at my hands and saw that they were shaking.
"Okay when you feel the urge to push and get another contraction, I need you to push." I told her.
She cried out as another contraction started, she grit her teeth as she pushed as hard as she could.
"That's great you're doing really well." I told her.
I made eye contact with Ethan and he nodded reassuringly.
"Okay now you need to do the same again." I said.
She did as I asked. A few more contractions passed and she began mumbling something to Ethan.
"What's she saying?" I asked him.
"That she loves me, I think she thinks I'm Pete, being so exhausted is making her confused." he stated.
"Almost done, just one more push!" I exclaimed.
She screamed and pushed at the same time. I quickly caught the baby in my arms and wrapped him in my cardigan as Amy sagged against Ethan.
"Are you okay?" I heard him ask her.
She nodded slowly. I smiled and handed her son to her.
"It's a boy." I smiled as he started crying.
She looked down at him with tears in her eyes, it felt like a privalage to be present for such an amazing moment. Ethan came out from behind her and moved her slightly so that her back was against the tree.
"I'm going to run back to the car to see if I can get a signal." he told me.
I nodded and watched him go.
