A week had passed since Caleb's announcement. I still hadn't managed to process it. I hadn't even thought about becoming a father, but now that I knew I could have been if it wasn't for the accident, I felt an overwhelming sense of loss. It had also caused me to feel even more guilty than before. If only I hadn't started the argument that led to the accident, we could have been a family. First Emma didn't remember me and now my child had died.

I had barely spoken to Emma since, I needed to distance myself for a while. I couldn't let her know what had happened, I needed to pretend in front of her and right now that was proving hard.

Emma had been discharged a few days ago and had returned home. Ever since she returned I had been staying with Rita. I couldn't be around Emma all the time, it was a constant reminder that she had no idea who I was. I sighed as Emma arrived at work.

"It's your first day back, make sure you take it easy." I heard Tess tell her.

"Morning." Emma said as she walked over to me.

"Hi." I said quietly as I busied myself shuffling papers.

"We haven't spoken for a while." she said.

"Nope." I said shortly.

"Have I done something to upset you?" she asked.

"Of course not." I smiled falsely.

"Talk to me." she whispered as she placed her hand on my arm.

My skin tingled under her touch. I badly wanted to kiss her familiar lips, but I couldn't take the rejection anymore. I was done trying, maybe Caleb was right, maybe she would remember in her own time.

"I have things to do." I said as I quickly walked away.

Emma's POV

I looked after him as he walked away. I couldn't shake the feeling that I'd done something to upset him. I missed being around him. He said that we were good friends but I had no recollection of it. All I knew was that he'd been there for me for the last few days. Something about being in his presence made me feel content, like there was a special bond between us.

I sighed and started my shift.
