It was a morning like every other for most people. The adults go to work to pay the bills and the kids go to school to learn what society sees as fit for them. Ava, a young 19-year old who was dragged to a different town by her mother and her new stepfather. Fortunately, it wasn't the stereotypical situation of the stepfather being this evil with nothing but malice. She actually liked him, since he was nothing but caring and loving towards her mother. She hadn't seen her that happy since her...well, ever. The stepfather came with a stepbrother. Little Diego. He was a few years younger than Ava but that didn't stop them from getting along. Ava with her childish and dorky personality always managed to get dragged into prank wars that Diego would start. She didn't mind. Ava had always wanted a sibling, so she was delighted when she first met Diego who would just laugh at any little joke or comment that Ava would say or make. The alarm clock had been going off for 4 minutes when Ava's mom walked into her room.
-Honey, if you put an alarm this loud this early in the morning and you wake up everyone but yourself, maybe we'll need a new system., chuckled the mom as she turned the alarm off, picking a t-shirt up from the floor and walking out again.
Ava waited for her to leave and hear the door close to finally open her eyes and sit up with a smile. She was already fully dressed. Ava wasn't able to sleep much since the excitement but also anxiety of going to a new school had kept her up all night. Surely she was happy to get a fresh start, but this was a completely different school.
A small detail that should be shared is the fact that Ava's mother was in fact a well-known and respected CEO of a big law firm. She always wanted Ava to attend a public school since she didn't want her to become a spoiled brat who has zero common sense, or at least that's what she said. Yet now that they moved and Ava was finally going to attend a college after a gap year where she spend 8 months working with her stepfather at the hospital. Her new house was only 15 minutes away from her new school by car. A private school. It was the only school in the city that allowed her the subject she had always been passionate about. The biodiversity in oceans also known as marine biodiversity. She had always loved the ocean but what she loved the most was putting her head underwater and just observe everything that was going on underwater. It was so quiet. So pretty. So peaceful. Ironically, it took her years to learn how to swim properly since she was too impatient and would always simply dive under water and then panic once she could go back up again. She kept up with the two first weeks of school via online school since she was moving and couldn't attend it.
It was finally her first day at her new school. She had waited for that moment for a while. Ava eventually got up after daydreaming for a bit as she had zoned out due to her excitement. She walked to her bathroom, splashing her face with water. She quickly brushed her teeth, not caring about her hair though, since she had cut it short so she wouldn't have to spend too much time on it anymore. She walked out of her room with her school uniform that she picked up on Saturday. Ava hated wearing skirts so of course she opted for pants. Fortunately, her school was open-minded enough to allow and apparently she wasn't the first to do so. She walked downstairs, finding her mom making breakfast.
-Mom? You're still home?, asked Ava with a slight frown but a smile on her face.
-Yes. I took the day off. It's your first day of school and I wanted to be here this afternoon for you. So no long day at the office. I'm all yours today., explained the mother as she flipped a pancake.
-Aw, mom., smiled Ava, hugging her mother.
-Alright sweetheart, sit down and eat up., smiled the mother after hugging her back.
Diego joined them.
-Hey kid. You ready for a new school?, asked Ava, chuckling as the boy groaned.
-How are you this excited about school?, wondered the boy as he sat down next to Ava.
-Oh I'm not. I'm faking the excitement so my brain won't go through the usual seasonal depression. Plus, I'm going to make that school my bitch., joked the girl as she took a sip of her coffee.
-I feel like you shouldn't be allowed to drink coffee. You're already energetic enough without it., said Diego with a chuckle.
-He's not wrong you know., added the stepfather as he joined them in the kitchen as well.
Ava watched him approach his mother, pecking her lips with a smile on his face. It made her happy seeing her mother being loved and treated right. She smiled but looked away to give them some privacy as she started devouring her pancake.
-Can I take the car?, asked Ava between bites.
-We've talked about this. If you want a car, you have to be able to pay half of it. Without touching your emergencies-only money., replied her mother.
-Eh, it was worth a try., chuckled Ava, eating up and then getting up.
She placed her dishes in the sink, kissed her mother's head and then walked out.
-I'll see you at 3! Have a nice day!, yelled Ava as she put her beautiful black boots on.
She grabbed her backpack, walking out of the house after checking twice if she had her keys. She didn't hate her outfit but of course she would have preferred dressing as her usual self would. She tried to make it work though. Since it wasn't cold yet, she wore a white shirt with the dark blue blazer and then her black pants. The tie wasn't obligatory however she still decided to wear it. At least for the first day. She had spent half an hour in the evening trying to make the perfect tie, Youtube being her teacher. She was too lazy to walk to school that morning to she got on the bus that would take her to the school. As she sat down, she felt some eyes on her.
