Jay's POV
The taxi continued to drive farther and farther away from the Sheraton. My heart was pounding, but I kept my face neutral. I had to play this smart.
"Please wake me up when we arrive," I said, faking a yawn.
"Of course, sir," the driver replied, his eyes meeting mine briefly in the rearview mirror.
I leaned back, closing my eyes and pretending to doze off. Every muscle in my body was tense, ready to spring into action at any moment. The gentle hum of the engine and the occasional bump in the road were the only sounds for what felt like hours.
Suddenly, the road got rougher. The car jostled violently, and I had to fight to keep my sleeping act convincing. Then, abruptly, we stopped.
I heard car doors opening, footsteps crunching on gravel. My door flew open, and rough hands grabbed me, dragging me out of the car. I let my body go limp, but acted like I wanted to fight back.
This was it. Everything was going according to Heeseung's plan. We'd known they'd make a move, try to pick us off one by one. And now, they'd taken the bait.
As I felt myself being carried away, I sent up a silent prayer. "Niki, I hope you're ready. It's all on you now."
I hoped, with everything in me, that Niki would come through. Because if he didn't, this might be the last move any of us ever made.
Niki's POV
I'd been cramped in the trunk for what felt like hours, trying to breathe quietly and stay as still as possible. When the car finally stopped, I waited, listening intently. I heard Jay being dragged away, then silence.
Carefully, I eased the trunk open, thankful for the well-oiled hinges. I slipped out, immediately ducking behind a nearby hedge. The mansion loomed before me, its windows glowing in the twilight.
I crept along the perimeter, staying low and in the shadows. My heart was pounding so hard I was afraid someone might hear it. But I had to keep going.
Finally, I made it to the backyard. A guard stood near the back door, scanning the area lazily. I grabbed my katana. One quick, silent move and he was down.
I pressed myself against the wall of the house, inching towards an open window. Voices drifted out - two men, talking and laughing over glasses of wine. I tensed, ready to strike, but then I heard one of them say, "Let's go check on our guest."
Relief flooded through me as they left the kitchen. I slipped in through the window, landing softly on the kitchen tile.
Once inside, I pulled out my phone, sending a quick voice message to the others. "I'm in." I whispered.
As I put my phone away, a wave of sadness hit me. Jake should be here. He would've known how to disrupt their signal and the house's security system, how to give us an edge. He was always the smart one, the tech guy. God, I missed him.
I shook my head, forcing the grief away. I couldn't think about that now. Jake would want us to finish this, to make things right.
Taking a deep breath, I moved through the house quickly and quietly. No big deal. I've done this kind of thing with Heeseung tons of times before.
I heard some guards talking around the corner. Two of them. Easy. I lunged, hitting the guy in the stomach and pulling back as fast as I can to slash the other guy at the neck. I took them out before they even knew what hit them.
The hallway had a bunch of doors. Jay was probably behind one of them, but I couldn't just start opening them randomly. That'd be stupid. I needed more info.
