Sunoo's POV
I lay on the bed, staring at the unfamiliar ceiling. The room was quiet, almost too quiet. It made my thoughts seem louder, bouncing around in my head like they were trying to escape.
How did we end up here? It felt like yesterday when life was... normal. Well, as normal as it could be in our world. But now? Everything was upside down.
A soft knock on the door jolted me from my thoughts.
"Come in," I called out, my voice sounding hoarse even to my own ears.
The door creaked open, and San's familiar face peeked in. "Hey, Sunoo. You got a minute?"
I sat up, smoothing down my rumpled shirt. "Yeah, sure. Any news?"
San shook his head, closing the door behind him. "Nope. Just wanted to check on you."
I felt myself relax a bit as San sat down next to me on the bed. It was nice, having someone care enough to check in. Even if it made me feel a little guilty for being so... useless.
"Life's been pretty unforgiving lately, huh?" San said, his usual cocky grin replaced by a more somber expression.
I let out a humorless laugh. "Yeah, you could say that again."
We sat in silence for a moment, the weight of everything that had happened pressing down on us.
"Sometimes I wonder," I started, my voice barely above a whisper, "where all this is leading. If it's just gonna end with... you know." I swallowed hard. "With me dead, life should just give me a heart attack now and get it over with."
San scoffed, bumping his shoulder against mine. "Well, it didn't. So you're not gonna die, okay?"
I managed a small smile, grateful for his attempt at reassurance. But then San's expression turned serious again.
"But Heeseung..."
I looked at him, my heart rate picking up. "What about him?"
San met my gaze, his eyes filled with a mix of admiration and worry. "He's ready to die. For you."
My brows furrowed, and I looked down at my hands, twisting them in my lap.
"I've never seen him like this before," San continued. "So determined. So... willing to do whatever it takes. He's in deep, Sunoo. Deeper in trouble and love than I've ever seen him."
I felt a lump forming in my throat. "I didn't... I never wanted this. Any of this."
"I know," San said softly. "But here we are."
Tears pricked at my eyes, and I blinked hard, trying to keep them at bay. "I don't want anyone to die because of me. Especially not Heeseung."
San put an arm around my shoulders. "Hey, nobody's dying, alright?"
But his words, meant to comfort, only made the reality of our situation hit harder. "But what if we can't stop it? What if... what if this is it? The end of the line?"
San was quiet for a moment, and when he spoke again, his voice was gentle but serious. "Sunoo... are you ready for the worst? If it comes to that?"
The question hit me like a punch to the gut. Was I ready? Could anyone ever be ready for something like this?
I felt the first tear slip down my cheek, followed quickly by another. "I don't... I don't want to die, San."
