Wei was correct. It didn't take long for Kai to find the large cypress tree Minda spoke about. His steps quickened from a walk to a jog at the sight. He didn't know why but he needed to see Minda again."Are his injuries okay?" Kai wondered. He could still remember the way Minda looked when he saw him. With his experience in the military he knew how serious they were.
"The First Prince should have arranged a doctor to tend to his injuries. With the best care maybe he'll be okay?" Kai hoped. As he hurried along he couldn't stop himself from thinking about Minda. About the young man with striking gray hair that shimmered in the light. Even now the thought made him blush.
"He'll be okay. I wouldn't be here if he wasn't."
Kai didn't know why he was given a new body. When he tried to make sense of the situation he could only think of one reason. That perhaps God or some divine being had decided to grant his dying wish. The wish to have more time with the strange naive man from the cell next to his.
...
When he finally reached the house something felt strange. He stopped to look around. The feeling that something wasn't right growing stronger with each passing moment.
"It's too quiet."
The noble district was always bustling with noise. Servants were cont coming and going, tending to the yards, cleaning, running errands. There was also a presence of guards roaming the streets to ensure the safety of the nobles. Yet, the moment Kai approached the Chen family estate with the old cypress tree things became eerily quiet.
"Where are all the people?" Kai wondered. He knocked on the gate but there was no answer. Not even the sound of people inside could be heard.
"Is Minda not here? Could something have happened to him? Am I too late?"
Kai grew more worried. The man called Wei knew where the Chen family lived and he did mention Minda was rescued alive but there was still a chance something happened after his rescue.
"No, he's alive and I will find him." Kai thought. Even yhe thought that Minda might be suffering somewhere or worse dead felt like someone had grabbed Kai's heart and started to squeeze.
He approached the gate and pushed hard. Unfortunately, it was locked. Kai wasn't satisfied with just leaving. He circled the estate and tried the back gate and servant's entrance. When none of those worked Kai considered hoping the wall and breaking into the estate to search for Minda directly.
"Hey, what are you doing there!" A guard shouted from atop his horse. He had noticed Kai wandering the area. Kai's disheveled appearance and worn ragged clothing made it obvious he didn't belong in the area.
"Do you know what happened to the Chen family?" Kai asked. The guard was clearly suspicious of Kai, but Kai was actually glad to see him. He hoped the man might know something given his position as a guard.
"The Chen family? They've all been killed off. Executed for treason." The guard said.
"The youngest son Chen Minda was alive and rescued from the dungeon. Do you know where he is now?"
"The youngest... ah! I remember now. You're talking about the cursed kid with the gray hair. I nearly forgot about him."
"He isn't cursed" Kai wanted to shout but instead he took a deep breath and politely asked the guard about Minda's whereabouts.
"Do you know where he is?"
"Not sure, but everything in the estate was packed up and sent to their summer home." The guard said.
