The rain started out gentle and Minda enjoyed watching it from the carriage. Kai worried for him but after living together he had come to accept Minda's love of watching the rain. He grabbed Minda's hand that had begun to tremble from the discomfort and started massaging it.
"Will everyone be okay?" Minda asked when he noticed several of the men riding horses. Kai looked out the window but didn't seem concerned.
"They're fine."
"What if they catch a cold?"
"MinMin, you're the only one who might get sick." Kai wanted to say but instead chose to give him a light kiss on the cheek.
"Do you want me to massage your knee?" Kai asked. Minda looked down and his aching knee but was determined not to complain about it.
"You don't have to worry so much." Minda said but Kai grabbed another thick blanket and wrapped it around him. Suddenly the wind blew hard and Kai was quick to move and cover Minda's body from the rain blowing in through the open carriage window.
"It seems to be getting worse." Minda said as he wiped away some water that was rolling down Kai's troubled face.
"Let's close the curtain." Kai said but Minda still wanted to watch.
"What if we use the sheer curtains only? It will block the rain but I can still look outside." Minda said. The sheer curtains were meant to be used to block out the insects.
"MinMin..." Kai started to say with plans to object but looking at his big pleading eyes Kai changed his mind and agreed to let him continue watching the rain.
"Only for a short while." Kai said.
"Huan, Xianli, come here." Kai then called out. Huan ran over obediently while Xianli ignored him. Kai frowned at the lazy snow leopard before giving Huan a fish treat.
"Why are you bothering them?" Minda asked curiously.
"Natural heaters." Kai said as he stuffed Huan into Minda's arms. Holding the little snow leopard Minda had to admit it was warm and soft. Not complaining he made himself more comfortable and continued to watch the rain.
...
Smack*
"Stop looking so grim. The rain won't last forever and your little soulmate will be back to his usual self." General Lei told the exhausted Kai as he hit him on the back without restraint. Kai nearly fell over from the strength of the hit. He would have normally complained but he was too tired at this point.
"How is Minda feeling?" Sir asked.
It had been three days since the rain started. The first day they stayed on the road but on the second General Lei found a small village and rented a house to give the soldiers a reprieve. More importantly he did it for Minda's health which was deteriorating quickly.
"His fever's high and he can barely sleep from the aching pain." Kai said.
"Should I have Yanlin get a doctor?" Sir asked.
"There isn't much that can be. I've given him his medicine and it's helping but until the rain stops I doubt his condition will improve much." Kai solemnly said.
"Buck up and smile. The rain has started to ease up. I bet it will stop sometime tonight." General Lei said. Kai looked out at the sky but couldn't see what General Lei saw. To him the rain was like a liquid poison hurting his precious MinMin.
"Damn rain." Kai cursed as he headed back into one of the two bedrooms in the little house. Because of Minda's health he was given a room to use while the other was for the General and Sir.
