"Was he bothering you?"
!!!
Kai suddenly appeared from the other side with a suspicious look as he watched General Lei walk away.
"Like father like son." Minda couldn't help but think as he calmed his racing heart. Kai looked at Minda concerned that General Lei might have said something inappropriate.
"MinMin?" Kai said when he didn't get an answer right away.
"Sorry, what did you ask?" Minda said. A feeling of déjà vu hitting him as he spoke.
"What did the General say?" Kai asked again. Minda's lack of focus filling him with worry.
"He just asked if I was feeling okay."
"Is that all?" He asked with suspicion. Minda considered saying more but liked the idea of keeping the General's love for Kai a secret.
"It is. By the way is the the General married?" Minda asked. The way he talked about love had caught Minda's attention and he couldn't help but feel there was a story behind it.
Kai could see Minda's eyes sparkle as he waited for an answer. He knew Minda wanted a beautiful story but General Lei's love life was a bit complicated.
"I'll tell you tonight. I have to talk with Houtian first." Kai said before walking off .
"Strange." Minda curiously thought as he watched him leave.
...
Once preparations were complete Kai took his place next to Minda at the driver's seat.
"Ready to go?" Kai asked as he grabbed the reigns.
"Absolutely." Minda said. His answer full of energy unlike earlier in the day. Kai was glad Minda was more like his usual self.
"I'll have to properly thank Sir later." He thought as he pulled the reigns to move ahead.
"Honey, why does it feel like we're rushing?" Minda asked. The ride seemed faster than previously. Not so much it was uncomfortable but enough for Minda to notice.
"It's a bit quicker than earlier because of the attack. General Lei is most likely trying to Make up the lost time." Kai explained.
"Will it be a problem if we don't get to our destination on time?"
"The later we arrive the less time we'll have to set up camp before it gets dark."
"About that, you mentioned helping with dinner. Do you know what it is I'll be cooking?" Minda asked.
"It won't be anything too complicated. While traveling we usually have porridge, stir fry vegetable or wild plants that we can gather around the area, and barbecue meat we've hunted along the way." Kai explained.
"Is that all? I feel like everyone should have better food to eat. You all work so hard and need the energy." Minda said.
"The army works on a very tight budget. If we want to eat well we need to gather the ingredients ourselves. Back at the barracks some soldiers spend their wages on buying and raising their own chicken for the eggs." Kai said thinking back at the wandering chickens amongst the tents.
"Can the army not get eggs for everyone?"
"After a long drawn out battle we might get them as a reward, but to buy them everyday for everyone is a problem of logistics and cost." Kai said.
"It doesn't feel fair that nobles can eat the most expensive foods but our soldiers fighting on the frontline can't afford to eat an egg. If they lived more frugal lives the money saved could be spent on the army or the common people." Minda remarked.
