The next morning Minda and Kai left on horseback into town. Auntie Feifei had wanted to use the carriage and go along but Minda refused. He was really excited to go alone with Kai on horseback. Unable to dissuade him she could only wave them off early in the morning.
The ride into town wasn't long nor was it short. On a hot summer day the sun beat down on them. Worried Minda would get overheated Kai chose to speed up the horse to a gallop for a nice cool breeze. Minda wasn't worried about the speed. Minda had gotten used to it after riding together nearly every morning for the past month.
As they rode towards town Minda noticed a group of men standing around an ox and cart. He could tell something wasn't right but wasn't quite sure what it was.
"What is happening over there?" Minda wondered aloud.
"Minda, whatever happens next don't get off the horse." Kai warned in a deep serious voice. Minda looked back at him. He wanted to mention how he didn't know how to get off the horse without his help. But the serious look on Kai's face stopped him.
"Is it that bad?"
"They are getting robbed."
"Really? We have to help." Minda exclaimed. He had heard and read about bandits and how dangerous traveling the roads could be. However, he never expected to witness a robbery in person.
"I will but you must promise to stay on the horse and if I say run you pull on the reigns and ride back to the estate without stopping for anything." Kai firmly stated.
"And leave you behind? I can't."
"I'll be fine. Promise me you'll run if I say run. Otherwise we aren't stopping." Kai stated unwilling to negotiate. Minda grumbled a little before answering.
"I'll promise but only because Kai is strong. I won't need to leave. If by chance he does tell me to run I'll just break my promise." Minda decided before agreeing to Kai's condition.
"Okay."
"I'm serious Minda. This is a promise you cannot break."
Minda was grateful he was sitting in front of Kai so he couldn't see his face as he lied.
"I promise."
"Liar." Kai secretly thought as he looked at Minda's hunched shoulders. He didn't need to see Minda's face to know he wouldn't keep his promise. Despite Minda's obvious lie Kai still decided to help
"I'll just have to make sure he's safe." Kai thought as he headed towards the ox cart currently being attacked by bandits.
...
Too keep Minda safe Kai stopped the horse a safe distance away. He wouldn't put Minda at risk just to save a few strangers.
"Why are you getting off here? You won't be able to save them from this far away." Minda critiqued.
"It'll be fine as long as you stay here where it's safe." Kai reminded him his deep black eyes staring up at Minda waiting for his response.
"I'll stay." Minda said. Kai smiled before running off. As he ran Minda didn't forget to wish Kai well.
"Be careful and beat the sh*t out of them!"
Minda's sudden cursing shocked Kai so much he nearly tripped. He never expected Minda to say those words. When he looked back Minda had a serious face with his fist clenched up high to cheer him on. Unable to hold back a laugh Kai headed over to help the distressed group of travellers surrounded by five barbaric looking bandits.
...
"Men! it looks like we have a wannabe hero coming our way." The strongest looking man joked in a loud voice for everyone to hear. Kai didn't care that they were mocking him. He knew he could take them without breaking a sweat.
