After breakfast, Kai brought Minda out into the garden. It was a beautiful warm spring day. The sun was shining bright through the trees. Minda first told Kai to head towards the western part of the garden. There was a small lily pond with koi he hoped to show him.
"When I was younger I would sit by the pond and feed the koi. There is a gold koi fish that was given to my family by the Feng family as a wedding gift. It's very old and really big but also a bit shy. It likes to hide in the corner of the pond where their are a lot of reeds." Minda said as he pointed out towards the pond.
They stood by the pond for a few minutes looking for the large elusive gold koi when Auntie Feifei came over.
"Young Master, why haven't you gotten dressed yet? If you come outside with nothing but your nightgown you'll catch a chill." She chastised as she hurried over with a blanket for him.
"I didn't notice. Besides I don't think it matters anyway. The weather is nice today." Minda said.
"It's not proper. You have a guest." Auntie Feifei pointed out.
"Kai isn't a guest. He's going to start living here. I also don't think he cares what I'm wearing, right Kai?"
"Living here? Young Master, that is..."
"We've already talked about it. He doesn't have a place to go and I want him to stay so it works out."
"I will do work around the house and earn my keep." Kai said.
"That's right. Kai is very capable. He can help Uncle Ran with the garden and taking care of the horses." Minda proudly boasted.
"If he will be staying here I think it would be wise to have him live in the servants quarters with us." Auntie Feifei said. Minda however didn't like the idea.
"He's helping around the house but he isn't a servant. He's my friend." Minda rebuked in a stern voice.
"Understood." Auntie Feifei said a bit taken aback by his tone.
She worried about Minda and thought of him as her own child. Even so, she knew her place and wouldn't force the issue. Minda felt a little bad about the tone he used with her so despite not thinking it was important he decided to go back to his room to get dressed.
"Kai, do you mind helping me back to my room?" Minda asked.
Kai didn't say anything and just started to push him towards his room on the other side of the garden. As they walked Minda pointed out the different trees.
"We only spent the summer here but the garden is made to look beautiful all year round. Right now there's the plum blossom trees but they are nearing the end of the blossoming season. Summer is very green with a lot of shade and beautiful flowers blooming all around."
"I look forward to seeing it." Kai said as he continued pushing Minda forward.
...
When they reached the bedroom Auntie Feifei appeared again with a change of clothes for Minda. It was a thick outfit meant for late fall, early winter. Minda looked at it thinking it was too much but Auntie Feifei thought differently.
"I'll help you change." She said as she moved to take over pushing Minda's wheelchair.
"I can change by myself." Minda shyly stated. He could tell she was worried but he wanted to seem self sufficient in front of Kai.
"I will wait on the other side of the screen if you need my help." Auntie Feifei said as she pointed to the dressing area. Minda was happy she agreed and proceeded to try and roll himself behind the screen. Kai however was quicker and pushed him over before he had a chance to touch the wheels of his chair.
