Once the guards were gone Kai quickly removed the stone. He took off his top layer of clothing and intended to stuff it through the hole for Minda to use on his side of the wall. Before he could, he saw the pale white tips of Minda's fingers peeking through.
He stopped what he was doing and reach down to touch him. Minda flinched at first but soon hooked his little fingers around Kai's thick index finger.
Kai felt himself smile. He settled down and in the same way Minda had touched his hand earlier he began to do the same for Minda. He brushed his fingers across the palm of Minda's hand. His fingers slowly tracing the the creases in his palms. He had once heard how fortune tellers could learn about a man's fate by examining them.
"I wonder if these lines predicted he would suffer such a terrible fate?" Kai wondered as he lightly touched them. Minda's hand flinched from his touch. Not because it was painful. It was the opposite. His gentleness tickled Minda's hand and caused him to smile for the first time in a long time. His hands jerking broke Kai from his thoughts.
"You have a fever." Kai said. He had obviously noticed how hot and clammy Minda's hand was the moment he touched him.
"I don't think they'll give me medicine." Minda said from the other side.
"You'll need to stay warm. I'm going to pass you some of my clothing. Wrap yourself in them tight, drink some water, and get some rest." Kai explained.
"I can't. If I use your clothes you'll get cold." Minda said.
Minda's worry over whether he would be cold or not was both confusing and heartwarming for Kai. He had never had anyone worry about his health. Not even when his arm was nearly torn from his body during battle.
"I will be fine." Kai said as he once again proceeded to remove his clothing.
"What... what if the guards see?" Minda mentioned nervously. He was afraid of what the guards might do if they were caught.
"If the guards approach I will pull it back to my cell." Kai explained.
"Can you do that?"
"I will attach my belt to the clothing and tie it to my end. Even if you are asleep I will be able to retrieve the clothing." Kai explained.
Minda liked the idea that Kai would be tied to him. He kept his one good hand in the hole awaiting the clothing. When he felt the rough cloth he slowly began to tug at it. His strength lacking as it was he couldn't pull it through on his own. Thankfully Kai was able to push it through from his side.
Minda was shocked at the large size of the clothing the mysterious man named Kai had given him. He held it up as high as he could despite his injuries. The clothing was tough and of poor quality. The obvious patches and mysterious stains made him more curious.
"I think he might even be bigger than my second eldest brother." Minda mused.
"Place this on your forehead." Kai said. Minda didn't know what he meant. He stuck his hand back in the hole and felt a cool wet sensation on his hand. Surprised he removed his hand.
"Don't be surprised. It's only a wet cloth." Kai said with a light chuckle.
"I... I know. I was just a little surprised." Minda fibbed. Embarrassed he slowly placed his hand back in the hole and took the cloth from Kai. He put the cloth on his forehead. The cool sensation felt nice. He then curled himself up in the man's oversized clothing.
"It's still warm." He thought. Minda raised his left hand to catch the wet cloth that was about to slip down.
"Ow!" He muttered. He had briefly forgotten how badly his hand was injured a few days earlier. Looking at he had that was still at a motley of concerning colours he was reminded of what happened earlier. Not wanting to think about it and attracted to the man's warmth he placed his only good hand back into the hole.
