Chapter one hundred and eight

"The babies killing you."

It was Christmas, as Athena was in Caroline's dorm room with their mom, their mom called Caroline "I just figured that we were skipping Christmas this year you know, considering the part where me and Athena die if we cross the border into our hometown." Caroline shared "what happened to Christmas being your favorite time of the year?" their mom asked "was my favorite time of year when I could actually live in my own house and help decorate the town tree and drink hot coco with my friends." Caroline shared, walking into the room.

"How about celebrating with just us?" Athena asked her "what are you doing? You're supposed to be at the mystic falls tree decorating ceremony." Caroline shared "I'm playing hooky this year. I figured just because you two can't come home for the holidays doesn't mean the holidays can't come to you." their mom shared "you even brought our favorite ornaments. Mom!" Caroline voiced, looking at the box in front of her.

Stefan then returned "hey, I, uh, didn't which one's to get so I got both." he shared, holding up boxes of Christmas lights, Caroline turned to him "the little one's obviously." she told him, as Athena furrowed her brows "is that supposed to be obvious?" she asked, as their mom laughed, walking over, she sat next to her and hugged her.

They all were then decorating Caroline's dorm, as Athena reached up trying to get the string of Christmas lights hung up on the shelf, Stefan walked up to her "whoa, hey, I got it." he told her "no, I can do it." Athena told him, as Stefan took them from her, Athena laughed, stepping back "okay! Okay! I get it I'll just sit down." she shared "who wants hot chocolate?" their mom asked as she walked back in, Athena felt a pain shoot through her "ow." she whispered, as Caroline looked to her "did you just say, ow?" she questioned "yeah but I think it's.." Athena was telling her, as she felt dizzy, falling over, Stefan sped over and caught her.

And as she did, their mom then closed her eyes, stumbling over as she dropped the hot chocolate "mom?" Caroline asked her, as their mom grabbed the chair "oh, wow. I just got really.." she shared, falling over, Caroline sped toward's her "mom!" she voiced, looking from her to Stefan and her sister, wondering what the hell was going on.

Having gone to the hospital, Stefan knew Jo wasn't in so he went for the second best option for Athena and compelled a doctor to run some tests to see what was wrong and told him to not show them to anybody but him, Elena or Jo, where they had taken x rays, where Stefan was now looking at them in shock and as he did, Elena ran in "hey, what happ..oh my god." she said, stopping when she looked at the x rays "is that?" she asked "Athena." Stefan told her, taking a deep breath "how..how is this happening? I thought the blood was helping her?" Elena asked.

"Well, think about it between when she found out about, Enzo snapped her neck, threw her on the ground, she got in the car accident when she went over the border where she was fine managed to save Damon and Enzo but when she came back over the border she fell over, and the next day with Tripp.." Stefan shared, running his hands through his hair "she was using too much of her strength. I mean she stumbled when we brought her mom here but she said it was because she was tired." he added on.

"She's been sleeping a lot. I mean on Thanksgiving Tyler said her hands were freezing cold and she helped Jo from falling." Elena shared, shaking her head, she motioned to the x rays "I mean her rib is cracked, she's just lucky enough she hasn't punctured anything but her bones are breaking. It's crushing her, Stefan." she shared, as Stefan turned around walking out, he slammed the door, as Elena followed after him "Stefan!" she called out to him, and as she did, Stefan wouldn't stop "would you stop and talk to me?" Elena asked him.

As Stefan stopped and turned to her "before I checked on her X rays. I was watching her mom and a doctor had come from radiology and I overheard her say glioblastoma." he shared "glioblastoma? No, but that.." Elena shared, as Stefan raised his brows "no..no, no." Elena said "you know how I said Athena stumbled after we brought her mom to the hospital? Well it seems when I took her home the doctors ran their tests and apparently they found something suspicous." Stefan shared "no, but that doesn't make sense, Stefan. Caroline or Athena would have said something." Elena shared.

"Or maybe their mom hasn't told them yet. Seeing as that same night she found out that her miracle daughter was having a miracle baby. Which is now killing her. So how am I supposed to tell the women I love that not only is the women who gave birth to her dying but that the baby that we both wanted is killing her?" Stefan asked, and as he did, Elena's fell as Stefan nodded "exactly." he told her, as he turned walking off.

It was late, as the sound of a beeping monitor started to fill Athena's ears, she opened her eyes and was looking at a hospital ceiling, she felt a weight on her, as she looked down seeing Stefan lying his head on her "Stefan." she told him, wincing, and she knew that didn't mean anything good, and Stefan heard her but as he had been sitting there, he had been thinking of a plan "Stefan, please.." Athena told him, wincing, Stefan lifted his head up "Athena I.." he told her, as Athena nodded "I know..you forget when I met your brother, he threw me into a tree, which injured my spine but that healed compared to my twisted ankle and the bite on my neck before I went to the hospital. And then I've had my leg broken twice now, I know what broken bones feel like Stefan." she shared, taking a deep breath.

"And I'm sorry because I didn't want to tell you because I didn't want you to be be mad at me." she added on, feeling like she was gonna cry, as Stefan stood up "no, no, no.." he told her, leaning down and kissing her on the forehead, he climbed into bed next to her and as he did, he put his arms around her, as Athena continued to cry, he knew he couldn't tell her about her mom, as he ran his hand through her hair "it's okay, Athena. It's gonna be okay." he told her, the same thing she did to him when he came to her crying, as he leaned down kissing her on the top of the head, he leaned his head on her's.

Taking her out of the hospital, Stefan had gone and got Damon's car seeing as they could go home, he drove it right up to the door, as the front door opened "what? This was gone." Damon shared, walking out "I blew this up." he shared "yeah, well, you weren't around to annoy me for the last four months, so I had a bit of extra time on my hands." Stefan shared, getting out of it, he turned and grabbed Athena out of the back, holding her in his arms "think about it as an early merry Christmas late welcome back to life present." he shared, giving him the keys, Damon laughed as he took them back "I'd hug you but.." he told him.

"Yeah." Stefan told him as he walked toward's the house "hey, just do me a favor? Don't die again. Those fenders were a real bitch to find." he shared, as Damon looked to hiscar "deal." he said, as he turned to Stefan "deal." he told him, as Stefan walked in, he sighed, as Damon followed him "well, we're home." Damon shared "yep." Stefan told him, looking down at Athena "you sticking around?" Damon asked "well, that depends, might have to kill Jermey if I find out that he slept in my bed." Stefan shared, turning and heading upstairs.

And as he did, he lied Athena down and pulled his phone out and dialed a number as he put the phone to his ear "this is Jo?" Jo asked "hey, it's Stefan, I, um, I know you've been through a lot today but I just wanted to run something by you." Stefan shared "sure, what is it?" Jo asked him "if someone was to die and they weren't fed vampire blood. Would putting it directly into their blood stream turn them into a vampire?" Stefan asked, and when he did, on the other of the line, Jo's eyes went wide, having not expected that question.
