113. GOODBYE MOTHER

Chapter one hundred and thirteen

"Goodbye mother."

That night, Stefan and Athena were sleeping in bed while Annabeth slept in her crib, although Annabeth soon started crying, the two of them got up, where as Athena headed to the bedroom to go downstairs, Stefan grabbed Annabeth out of her crib "shh. It's okay." he told her, as Athena headed downstairs, she headed into the kitchen "you believe your mother entrusted me to eulogize her?" Damon asked, as Athena looked at him and Caroline "I do." she said, as Damon and Caroline looked to her.

Athena pointed to the cabinet "Annabeth is hungry." she shared, walking to the cabinet, she grabbed the baby bottle and the formula "I think she's trying to teach me a lesson about my own mom. Was supposed to do the eulogy at her funeral, and I just.." Damon shared "we don't have to share." Caroline said, interrupting him, and as she did, Athena slammed the bottle one the counter "and you don't have to be rude." she told her "Athena, it's okay." Damon told her "no, it's not okay. Your family, too. So she doesn't get to treat you like crap just to make herself feel better!" she voiced.

"Well today is pretty much gonna be the worst day of my life." Caroline told her "but that's the thing, it's not. Because you have everyone in this house to be by your side for it! What's worse is what comes after when your sitting in silence and have nothing to think about except for the fact that their dead." Athena shared, and as silence over fell them, Annabeth's cries could be heard "appreciate the tip." Caroline told her, walking around her and out the door, Athena grabbed the bottle and stepped toward's the sink, filling it up, she turned to Damon "you were my mom's best friend. Whether you write or say it from the heart she would love it. Let everyone else in that church be damned if they don't like it." she shared, turning off the water, she closed up the bottle and shook it "thanks, Athena." Damon told her, as Athena walked out.

It was the day of the funeral as Athena had put on her black dress and her heels, curling her hair, she held Annabeth in her arms, as Stefan walked up to her "you've been upset since last night, what happened?" he asked "me and Caroline are just handling things differently. And last night I found her trying to take her feelings out on Damon and I then snapped at her so.." Athena shared, looking down at Annabeth, Stefan came up behind her putting his arms around her, he leaned his chin on her shoulder as he kissed her on the cheek "remember when my dad died? I couldn't take it I tried to kill Caroline and Rebekah and when that wasn't enough I snapped and wanted to kill myself." Athena shared.

"Athena, that's not...." Stefan told her, as Athena turned to him "Im not talking about me. I mean yes she has been there for me since I was fourteen but that's only.." she shared "three years of your life while Miranda was there for the rest of it." Stefan shared "I know she called me her brave her girl but I'm scared. I mean what if she turns of her humanity? I..I will be her number one target! Our baby will be her number one target! You.." Athena voiced, as Stefan put his hands on her face and kissed her "Stefan, I'm serious. If this turns into a Klaus situation where she gives you no choice, if you go over that edge. Then I'll go over the edge." Athena shared.

"And the version of you who went over the edge will pull me back. We love every version of each other, remember? Humanity or not I love you." Stefan told her, kissing her again, he pulled away, putting his arm around her "come on." he told her, walking the two of them out of the room.

Sitting at the funeral, Athena and Caroline sat next to each other, as Stefan sat next to Athena holding Annabeth for her so he could hold her hand "we're here today to pay our tribute and our respect to a pillar of our community, our sister, our protector sheriff Elizabeth Forbes. We are also here today to show our love and support for Liz's family and friends." the pastor shared, as all of the officers soon stood up and walked to the front putting a flag over their mom's casket, as they all then got into formation "calling sheriff Forbes." one of the officers said over the walking, as Athena took a deep breath, Caroline closed her eyes.

"This is the last call for sheriff Forbes. No response. Radio number two six is out of service after twelve years and four months of police service. Gone but never forgotten." the officer shared, as he turned "ten hut." he said, as the others turned around, as they began walking back, the others who were standing in the pews sat down.

Damon then walked up and he looked at what he brought up with him but then looked up at Caroline and Athena "Liz Forbes was my friend. In her last moments, she asked me to pass along a message to her daughters, but I cut her off before she could say too much, but I did overhear a conversation between her and Athena, she wanted you both to know how proud of you she was, and she should be. Because you are both beautiful, strong women, good sisters, generous friends, and a bright light in a sea of dark. She said you two were extraordinary, and you are, and so was she. Liz was a hero to this town, she was a hero to all of you, and she was a hero to me. Goodbye, sheriff. You will be missed." he shared, walking off, and as he did, a memory came to Athena.

Athena chuckled "very funny. Your just jealous that you can't do this." she told her, turning away from her, she did a backflip, but as she did, she fell, and when she did, she scraped her knee on the side walk "mommy!" she cried out.

And as she did, Caroline watched her, as the sound of the front door opened, as their mom ran out "sweetheart, what happened?" she asked, crouching down to her, Athena was crying as she turned to her "she flipped herself over like the circus freak she is and fell." Caroline shared, and when she did "you fell?" their mom asked, looking at Athena's knee, she wiped the blood away and when she did, the wound was healed, as her eyes went wide realizing what this meant, as she then leaned down, kissing her boo boo.

Caroline rolled her eyes as she turned heading inside, their mom looked up at Athena and wiped her tears away "shh. Shh. Come on, my brave girl." she told her, bringing her hand down and pulling her off the ground, she began walking them toward's the house, as the sun started to set "how do you feel about ordering pizza?" their mom asked "yay!" Athena voiced, as her mom laughed "there's that smile." she told her, as the two walked up the steps and into the house.

After it was over, they all headed to the grill, as Caroline and Athena stood together shaking people's hands "thank you so much. Thank you so much." they told two officers, yet other then when people came up to them her and Athena didn't speak to each other, and as they did, Athena looked through the crowd and found Stefan and her daughter with Damon at the bar "I'm gonna go to Stefan." she told her "yeah, I'm gonna leave." Caroline told her, as the two walked their separate ways.

Athena walked down to the bar, putting her arms around Stefan, Stefan put his free arm around her "can we go?" Athena asked him "yeah. Come on." Stefan told her, looking to Damon "we'll see you at home." he told him, as Damon nodded, Athena turned around walking off as Stefan followed behind her, carrying Annabeth.
