After spending almost a week at the Salvatore house, Estrella found her original bracelet with a note attached:
"Just like this bracelet, you're my falling star—guiding me even in the darkest nights. I'll be back soon, pumpkin. Until then, hold onto us. Forever yours, Kai." As she read the words, tears welled up in her eyes.
Later, she discovered that Liv had replaced her bracelet and had also helped Joshua mix poison into their coffee.
Lexi told her that Kai had completely lost control when he found out, and if it hadn't been for Jo, he would have killed Liv.
Amidst this chaos, another problem arose in Mystic Falls, but this time it was a natural one—Liz Forbes had peacefully died in her sleep.
A few hours earlier:
Caroline's heart raced as she pushed past the nurses and doctors, desperation clawing at her throat. "Where is she? Elizabeth Forbes, what room is she in?" she demanded, her voice sharp and urgent.
Damon stepped forward, his expression grave. "Caroline," he began softly, but the concern etched on his face only fueled her panic.
She turned to him, her eyes wide and filled with anxiety. "Damon, just tell me where she is!"
He sighed heavily, struggling to find the right words. "She fell asleep," he replied, his voice low.
The weight of his words hit Caroline like a punch to the gut. "What do you mean, asleep?" she asked, her breath quickening as she felt the ground beneath her shift.
"I couldn't wake her up," Damon said, his tone heavy with sorrow. "They said she slipped into a coma. They can make her comfortable..."
Caroline's heart sank as her hands clenched into fists. "She's not comfortable. She's dying!" The panic in her voice escalated, a mixture of anger and despair bubbling to the surface.
She felt the walls closing in around her, and the suffocating weight of reality crashed down.
She rushed into the room. "I didn't get to say goodbye. I didn't get to say goodbye to my mom."
Nearby, Stefan was on the phone, "Tyler, hey, it's Stefan. You might want to head back to Mystic Falls. Caroline's mom isn't doing too hot. I'll call you with updates."
Then after ending the call with Lexi and Estrella, he turned to Damon with a concerned expression.
"What'd the doctors say?" he asked, bracing himself for the answer.
Damon answered, "Oh, she's stable, but, you know."
Stefan pressed, "How much longer?"
His voice dropped, "Not long. The hospital says she has a DNR, so..."
The EKG beeped steadily in the background. "I'm gonna get some air."
Caroline, full of regret, whispered, "I should have been with her."
Estrella and Lexi, who had just arrived, tried to console her, saying it wasn't her fault.
Stefan gently reassured her, "You didn't know."
Caroline, struggling to hold back tears, said, "But I knew she was sick, and I knew it was bad."
Stefan tried to comfort her, "Caroline..."
She interrupted, "I'm her daughter, Stefan, OK? I was supposed to give her peace and convince her that I would be OK and thank her for being an amazing mom. God, I don't even remember the last thing I said to her. I was supposed to be with her in her final moments."
