As Kai continued to work on repairing the ascendant, Estrella immersed herself in reading the grimoire.

"Why bother reading if you can't perform spells?" Kai mocked her, questioning her efforts.

Estrella simply rolled her eyes and ignored him.

"Even with the Ascendant and the spell, which I heard Bonnie cast, we still need Bennett's blood-not her magic, as I gathered from the cave, to complete our escape," Kai informed her.

"My brothers will come to rescue me. Besides, we also need magic for the spell, and neither of us can do it or siphon it," Estrella sighed, showing confidence.

"I know where we can find it," Kai smirked.

By evening, he fixed the ascendant, leaving only the need for magic and Bennett's blood.

"I have a plan. Get ready," he said, shocking her, and causing her hair to turn dark blue.

"We're going to Portland," he stated simply.

Estrella attempted to heal herself with magic, but she couldn't concentrate.

Kai, impatient to waste no time, helped-or rather dragged-her to the car.

Once they arrived, Estrella, visibly scared with her hair now white, asked, "Why are we here?"

In front of her was a plane like she'd seen in movies. "Because we're going by plane. It's easier and faster," Kai said.

"And I'm not in the mood for a long drive." He added to which Estrella mumbled, scared, "I've never traveled by airplane before."

"Who will drive it?" She asked, her tone laced with uncertainty as she looked around the cramped cabin.

"Fly the plane, not drive," Kai corrected, a smirk tugging at the corners of his lips.

"And in our two-person census, it would be me, of course. You're lucky to be on a private flight piloted by yours truly." He added, pointing to himself with a smirk.

"You know how to fly a plane? Don't you need a licence for that?" She questioned, her eyebrows raising in doubt.

Kai stared at her, deadpan. "I'm just gonna pretend you didn't ask me that. But to answer your first question, yes, I know how to fly. It's not like I had anything better to do for 18 years. You learn to pick up a few skills."

"But it's scary because it stays in the air. I think we should go by car. It's safer." She added, while Kai looked on, amused by her fear.

"Do you know how long it'll take by car and how much petrol it'll use? Pollution isn't a joke, pumpkin," he remarked, his tone teasing yet oddly earnest as he leaned against the car.

Estrella arched an eyebrow, her skepticism evident. “Yes, because flying in a plane is just a beacon of environmental responsibility. Great logic, Kai. Please find another way to reach our destination.” Her voice dripped with sarcasm as she crossed her arms, resolutely unimpressed.

“The plane is the quickest way,” Kai insisted, shaking his head with an exaggerated sigh.

He stepped out of the car and opened her door with a flourish, an air of bravado surrounding him.

"Yes, to our demise," Estrella shot back, her eyes narrowing as she studied him. His unbothered demeanor only intensified her trepidation.

Kai merely laughed, an infectious sound that seemed to echo in the cool evening air, as he extended his hand to help her out of the car.

“Honestly, I could just knock you out or drug you for the whole ride,” he suggested nonchalantly, as if he were proposing a casual detour rather than an act of dubious morality.
