Damon, Elena, Bonnie, and Kai were outdoors in a snowy Mystic Falls.

It was still daylight, and the group looked around at the scenery.

"Well, isn't this a picturesque slice of hell?" Damon remarked.

"You guys go ahead. Kai and I will start the locator spell on the Ascendant," Bonnie instructed.

"But Kai just had the Ascendant. Why do we have to find another one?" Elena asked, confused.

"The Ascendant can't travel between worlds, which means we gotta find its mirror image here in 1903," Kai explained.

"Page 10 on the world-jumping rule book. Shall we?" Damon said sarcastically as he started walking toward the boarding house.

Elena hesitated and turned to Bonnie. "I don't want to leave you alone with him."

"I'll be fine," She assured her, noticing Kai catching snowflakes on his tongue. "He's good now, remember? New leaf."

Elena gave Bonnie a concerned look but left to join Damon.

"New leaf? You believe me?" Kai asked, a hint of hope in his voice.

"Hell no. But Damon and Elena need to meet his mom alone. So shut up and let's find the Ascendant," She replied curtly.

As Elena and Damon entered the house to search for his mother, they stumbled upon black-and-white photos from the 1800s featuring Stefan, Damon, and Estrella.

Elena found a tintype photo of one of the brothers from when they were young children on the mantle and cooed happily, "Aww, Damon! You were so adorable!"

She picked up the photograph, examined it, and then showed it to Damon.

He looked at the photo and grimaced. "Aww, thanks! Except... that's Stefan."

"Where's Little Estrella?" Elena asked, noticing that her childhood photo wasn't there; instead, a single photo from her adolescence was displayed.

"Father didn't want her photo to be taken. When I figured out how the camera worked, I stole it from my father's office and took this. It's her only photo from the 1800s," Damon explained, looking at the picture he had taken of Estrella.

She was smiling nervously because Stefan had scared her by saying the camera's flash would make her blind.

He noticed another photo on the mantle of himself as a child with his mother and grabbed it.

"This is me." He paused for a moment, staring at the photo before handing it to Elena.

"We're not here to socialize. We get the Ascendant, we find my mother, and after she flips Stefan's switch, we figure out what the hell we're going to do with her."

Elena, still looking at the baby photo of Damon, suggested, "Aw, you can give her another chance?"

Damon, as he rummaged through the desk, replied, "A chance to what? Disarray another literal boatload of people?"

"Stefan was a Ripper. You never gave up on him," She pointed out.

He retorted, "And where was Lily from 1858 to 1903? She was bingeing on blood across Europe while Stefan and I bore the loss."

Elena looked at him sympathetically, but he continued, "Not exactly maternal, Elena. As far as I'm concerned, my mother died when we buried her empty coffin. What we're looking for is just a tool to get my brother back."

She opened her mouth to say something, but before she could, a female voice called out behind them.

Elena turned, gaping in surprise. It was Lily, who had apparently been gathering firewood outside, and she was shocked to see Damon.
