Chapter 57

Damon was beyond pissed when he found out, but Stefan and Elena worked to reassure him that Estrella would be alright.

He felt a wave of relief, knowing that Estrella was far away from that weasel's shadow.

Alaric had mentioned something about him heading to Portland for some freaky crowning ceremony or whatever, so Damon took comfort in the distance between them.

But little did he know that Portland was exactly where Estrella was headed-right into the very heart of the situation he had hoped to shield her from.

Meanwhile, at the airport, Estrella received a call from Caroline, who was clearly upset for not being informed about the situation.

"Ella, you should have told me! I would have joined you," Caroline scolded.

"I'm fine, Care. Really, don't worry about it," She said, trying to sound more relaxed than she felt. "And I'll send you some photos from the event, okay?"

Caroline sighed, somewhat mollified. "Alright, but remember to send those photos. Besides, Mom and I are at the farmhouse for the weekend to relax,"

They chatted for a while, catching up and discussing the plans for the upcoming event.

"I'm getting out of range, Care. I'll have to hang up now," she lied, as they neared the airport.

Kai, on Estrella's request, kept quiet during her calls.

"Alright, Ella. Safe travels and remember those photos," She replied, her concern still evident.

"Will do. Talk to you soon," she said before ending the call.

As Estrella hung up, Kai watched her with amusement.

"Hey, calm down. Don't worry about all the what-ifs. Just enjoy the 'art show'," he said with a wink, gesturing to himself playfully.

She couldn't help but smile at his teasing.

During takeoff, Kai continued to reassure her, though she wasn't particularly nervous.

"You were such a scaredy-cat the first time we flew," he remarked, puzzled by her calm demeanor.

"Yes, but I trust the professionals now," she teased back, attempting to stay relaxed.

Kai feigned offense. "You didn't just say that. You dared to insult Captain Kai," he gasped dramatically, putting on a mock hurt expression.

"I was just joking," she said softly.

Kai scrutinized her face for any hint of deceit. When he realized she was indeed teasing, his serious expression melted into a smile.

"Someone's definitely getting punished when we land," He said, his eyes darkening as he gave her thigh a playful squeeze.

"Stop it," She mumbled, feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness.

Throughout the flight, Kai's constant chatter kept Estrella entertained.

At one point, he suggested they join the "mile-high club," leaving her confused.

"What's that?" she asked, wide-eyed.

When Kai explained, Estrella was shocked. "No way! That's not happening," she said firmly.

He looked disappointed but shrugged it off.

Upon arriving in Portland, they checked into the hotel. She tried to split the bill, but Kai gave her a stern look.

"I can't let you pay. That's an insult to my masculinity," he said firmly.
