(Y/n) was unusually excited as she slung her bag over her shoulders. It was already Wednesday morning- halfway through the week, and the weekend felt just within reach. Her mother had already left for work, but her father stood at the edge of the kitchen island, haphazardly attaching his badge to his shirt. His brow was furrowed in concentration, and the rushed way he moved made (Y/n) shoot him a curious glance.
"Something happen?" she asked, noting the unusual tension in the air.
Her father looked up at her, his expression softening slightly, though there was still a serious undertone in his gaze. "There's been an unverified intrusion at the Mao residence. I'm heading over to check it out, see if I can find anything."
(Y/n)'s eyes widened in surprise. An unverified intrusion? Her mind raced, the news striking her with concern. "Is everyone okay?" she asked quickly, her grip on her bag loosening, causing it to slide slightly down her shoulder.
Her father nodded, already making long strides toward the front door. "Yeah, everyone's fine," he assured her. "Mao's just a little shaken up. You know, it's just her and the kids."
(Y/n) exhaled slowly, nodding in understanding but still feeling a knot of worry tighten in her chest. Mao had been like a second mother to her, and the thought of anything happening to her or her kids sent a chill down her spine.
"Keep me updated?" (Y/n) requested, her voice softer now as she followed after him toward the door.
Her father gave a rushed nod, barely pausing as he grabbed his keys and slipped out the front door. (Y/n) watched him for a second, her heart still heavy with concern, before walking out that same door behind him.
As she stepped outside, she spotted Aiko standing by the mailbox, her troubled expression immediately drawing (Y/n)'s attention. Aiko was talking through the window of a familiar car- Emi's. The blonde was sitting behind the wheel, her face unreadable as she listened to Aiko, who gestured animatedly with her hands. The conversation seemed tense, and Aiko's sharp features only made her worry more.
With a huff, (Y/n) locked the door behind her and jogged over to where Aiko stood, trying to read the situation. As she approached, Aiko turned, her eyes flicking toward (Y/n) with a hint of frustration.
Aiko gestured toward Emi's car, her tone suspicious rather than angry. "Did you tell her to pick you up every day? Because if so, you could've told me so that I don't waste 30 minutes waiting for you."
(Y/n) blinked, taken aback by the sudden question. She glanced at Emi, who seemed unbothered in the driver's seat, then back to Aiko. "No, she's been offering."
Before Aiko could respond, the sound of Emi's passenger window rolling down caught their attention. The blonde leaned out, her icy blue eyes locked onto them as she called out, "Yeah, bitch, I'm no one's pet."
Aiko's face immediately hardened, her usually calm expression sharpening as her blue eyes snapped toward Emi's. "So you could hear me this whole time, huh?"
Emi smirked, her attention flicking back to (Y/n) with an almost dismissive air, as if entertaining Aiko any further was beneath her. "You getting in or what?" she asked, ignoring Aiko entirely.
(Y/n) found herself caught between them, the tension in the air thick. She glanced between Aiko's hardened expression and Emi's casual indifference, feeling a knot of discomfort twist in her stomach. With a sigh, she stepped forward. "I really appreciate the offer, Emi, but I can't just leave Aiko to walk by herself again."
For a brief moment, a flicker of annoyance crossed Emi's face, her features contorting in clear disgust. It was a look (Y/n) had seen before, one that reminded her of the time they'd run into Riku at the mall - cold, unbothered, and ready to cut ties if inconvenienced. "What a waste of gas," Emi muttered under her breath, loud enough for them both to hear. Without waiting for a response, she rolled her window back up and, with a quick rev of the engine, sped off, leaving them in a swirl of dust and exhaust.
