The peace in the room shattered like glass, and (Y/n)'s eyes shot open, her heart racing from the sudden intrusion. Riku stirred beside her, his body jerking awake as he blinked rapidly, trying to shake off the grogginess of his sleep. He instinctively reached for her hand, his brown eyes wide with confusion and alarm.
Reina stood in the doorway, her eyes wide and breathless like she'd just run a marathon to get there. Her face flushed with worry as she scanned the room, her gaze immediately landing on (Y/n), her expression softening just a fraction when she saw that she was awake. But her voice trembled as she spoke.
"(Y/n)?" Reina's voice was soft, barely above a whisper, as she took cautious steps toward the hospital bed. The room felt heavier now with her presence, the air thick with the weight of unspoken grief. Upon realizing it was just Reina, Riku exhaled a deep breath and allowed his head to fall back down, closing his eyes. He looked exhausted, like the weight of the world had kept him from finding any real rest.
(Y/n) had told herself she didn't want any visitors, had even turned her friends away earlier. But there was a strange comfort in seeing Reina standing there, her purple hair framing her face, her posture slouched as she stared at the state her friend was in. Despite everything, despite her own sadness, the girl was glad to see her.
Reina moved to the opposite side of the bed from where Riku rested, her lips pressed into a thin line as she took in the sight of her friend bandaged and connected to machines. Her expression softened immediately, a deep sadness flickering in her violet eyes.
"I'm so sorry... I heard about Taro," Reina whispered, her voice full of guilt and sympathy. The name hit (Y/n) like a punch to the chest, a sharp pang of grief spreading through her body, but she swallowed it down, refusing to let it show.
"Me too," (Y/n) replied quietly, her voice rough from the strain of it all. The words felt empty, but what else was there to say?
For a moment, silence filled the room, heavy and oppressive, and neither girl knew what to say next. The hum of the machines was the only sound, and it seemed to amplify the awkwardness hanging in the air. Reina shifted her weight, glancing down at (Y/n)'s bandaged arms, her lips parting as if she wanted to say something but wasn't sure how to start.
Finally, it was Reina who broke the silence.
"Have you ever heard about the time when Keiji tried to sneak into the school after hours?" she asked, her tone oddly casual, as if trying to shake off the somberness. She leaned against the side of the bed, her eyes brightening just a little.
(Y/n) blinked, a bit thrown off by the sudden change in subject. "No... when was this?"
Reina smirked, her old self returning, if only for a moment. "It was last year. He got it in his head that there was some kind of treasure hidden in the art room. He swore there was a secret passage or something, and he tried to get Souta to help him break in."
(Y/n) raised an eyebrow, a faint smile tugging at the corner of her lips. "That sounds like him. What happened?"
"He set off the alarm," Reina said, rolling her eyes. "They had to book it out of there before security showed up. Souta was furious, kept going on about how he didn't sign up for that kind of drama. Keiji couldn't stop laughing the entire time."
(Y/n) shook her head, the memory triggering something bittersweet. "Of course he couldn't."
Reina grinned, her posture straightening a bit as she warmed up to the conversation. "And then there was the time he convinced that group of freshmen that the cafeteria meatloaf was made of... what was it? Some kind of mutated fish? No, wait, it was alien meat. He said it was from Area 51. They freaked out so bad."
